What is Biochemistry?
A science that integrates life with chemistry, that attempts to determine how lifeless
molecules combine to give the attributes of life, that operates by the principle that
lifes molecules are selected for the functions they perform and answers to lifes
mysteries.
Types of Macromolecules
 Carbs
 Proteins
 Nucleic acids
 Lipids
What is a cell?
Is the smallest unit that is capable of performing life functions
Principles of Cell Theory
 All living things are made od cells.
 Cells are the basic units of structure and functions in living things.
 All new cells are prodeuced from existing cells. (Meiosis and Mitosis)
Meiosis I Meiosis II Mitosis
Prophase I Prophase II Prophase
Methaphase I Methaphase II Metaphase
Anaphase I Anaphase II Anaphase
Telophase I Telophase II Telophase
Cytokinesis

Prokaryotes Eukaryotes
DNA Is naked, circular and Bound to protein, is linear
usually no introns and usually has introns
Organelles No nucleus and neither Has a nucleus and also
membranebound membranebound
Reproduction Binary fission Mitosis and meiosis
Single chromosome Chromosomes paired
(haploid) (diploid or more)
6 moles of CO2 reacts with 6 moles of water in presence of sunlight and
produce 1 mol of Glucose and 6 moles of diatomic oxygen
Calvin Cycle is a set of chemical reactions performed by plants to reduce CO2 and
other compounds into glucose.
