SUGGESTION & RECOMMENDATION

Modal + V1
- We use should, ought to, and had better to give advice or make
recommendation.
(You’ll catch a cold if you go out like that. You should/ought to/had better take
a hat).

a) We prefer to use should when the recommendation is in passive voice.


(In passive voice Verb in form of V3)
- The manual says that the computer should be disconnected from the mains
before the cover is removed. (rather that ough to/had better be disconnected)

b) We don’t use had better to talk about past or to make general comments,
instead we prefer to use should or ought to. It is because had better usually
stronger than shoul and ought to.
- The builders should/ought to have finihed by the end of this week. (not: had
better have finished)

c) Had better also often implies a warning and more common in speaking.
- You had better take care on that, if not it can cut your hand.

A suggestion is an idea or a thought that someone proposes. A suggestion is
optional. It means that one can accept or reject the idea. We usually ask for
suggestions from others when we have to choose from some alternatives and we feel
hesitant or doubtful. We are not sure whether our choice right or not.

CONCLUSION
- Suggestions are weaker than recommendations because the suggestions given
are not based on the suggestion givers’ experiences, instead stuff they have
heard, seen, or read in the past.
- Recommendations are the opposite of suggestions and they are the official
version of suggestions. While suggestions and recommendations are given as
part of consideration for somenone.
- Advice is given as an opinion about what someone should do under a particular
situation based on a sense of counsel. Unlike advice, ideas knowlegde.
Therefore, ideas are personal and can be different from one person to another.
