ACTIVITY NO.2 HAZARDOUS MATERIALS

DESCRIPTION:
MURIATIC ACID is a concentrated acid-based stain remover. It removes mineral
deposits, dirt, rust stains, and slime from hard surfaces such as bathroom bowls,
tubs, sink, swimming pools, cleaning bricks, etching concretes, and tiles. It can break
down hard to remove stains and sanitize the treated surfaces.

Why Muriatic Acid is a hazardous material?

Yes is a hazardous material because effects of our Health like skin contact
causes severe burns, repeated or prolonged exposure to skin will cause
dermatitis. Muriatic acid is harmful if swallowed and may cause irreversible
damage to mucous membranes; repeated or prolonged exposure to corrosive
materials or fumes may cause gastrointestinal disturbances.

Muriatic Acid Safety

How to manage
It's important to read and follow safety advice given on the acid container
because the chemical is highly corrosive and also reactive. Protective
gloves , eye goggles, shoes, and chemical-resistant clothing should be
worn. The acid should be used under a fume hood or else in a well-
ventilated area. Direct contact can cause chemical burns and damage
surfaces. Exposure can damage the eyes, skin, and respiratory organs
irreversibly. Reaction with oxidizers, such as chlorine bleach or potassium
permanganate will produce toxic chlorine gas. The acid can be neutralized
with a base, such as sodium bicarbonate, and then rinsed away using a
copious volume of water.
