Let us play “ WHO WANTS TO BE A MOTION MASTER”?
Read and answer each item correctly. Write your answer on a sheet of paper.

Item Number 1.
Kizzie and Ken are siblings. They are both medical frontliners and
work at a hospital. Their house to the hospital is just a walking distance.

East, then turns back and jogs 30 m to the West. What is his total
displacement?
a. 130 m to the East c. 130 m to the West
b. 30 m to the East d. 30 m to the West

b. Disobey the road signs and symbols.
c. Follow the road signs and symbols all the time.
d. Violate the road signs and symbols when no one sees.
Item Number 4.
A car moving along a straight highway to the North direction
travelled 180 km in 3 hours. What is the velocity of the car?

Item Number 5.
A man walks 10 m in 2 seconds. What is his speed?
a. 0.5 m/s c. 1.5 m/s
b. 1 m/s d. 2 m/s

ENGAGE (Get the students’ minds focused on the topic )

Video Presentation ( Athletics)  Pictures

(An integration of MAPEH in Science Concepts)

The teacher shows a video about the Background of Athletics, different track events
such as sprints, middle distance events, long distance events, hurdles, relays, road
running, and race walking. Connect Athletics to the lesson which is all about
Acceleration.

In joining different track events, you experience acceleration.

EXPLORE (Provide students with a common experience)

Al this point, the students will :

( Demonstrate )
1. Choose an exercise, such as running in place.
2. Begin at a slow pace. Increase to medium pace. Then increase to
a fast pace.
As you increase the pace of exercising, what do you think happens to the rate of
your heart beat and your use of oxygen?
You experience changes in velocity many times every day. Each time you take a
step, you change the velocity of your body. When you write, the velocity of your hand
moving across the paper changes. You are most familiar with the velocity changes of a
moving car or bus.

LET’S HAVE A TOUR !

Different activities will be posted in the area. Take the students to every station
and let them perform the task that is required of them.

 Explain the Performance Rubric. ( See Rubrics Attached )

” I CHALLENGE YOU : CAN YOU CHANGE ME?”

Station # 1 : Changing Motion

You are to meet the following challenges in any safe way you can. Safe
means no one and nothing gets hurt in the process. Here are your challenges:

A. Start a ball rolling on the floor or on a table. Once it’s rolling, cause the
ball to change speed but not direction.
B. Start a ball rolling on the floor or on a table. Once it’s rolling, cause the
ball to change direction but not speed.
C. Start a ball rolling on the floor or on a table. Once it’s rolling, cause the
ball to change both speed and direction. Do this with one action. That means you
haven’t met the challenge if you change the ball’s speed and then start the ball
rolling again and this time change its direction.
1. List two ways you changed the speed of the ball without
changing its direction.
2. List two ways you changed the direction the ball was moving
without changing its speed.
3. List two ways you changed both the speed and the direction
of the ball.
Station Number 2
WHAT IS CHANGED IN ME?

Identify what is being changed in each illustration below. Place them under the
proper colored heading.
Red – if speed changes; direction remains the same
Orange - if speed remains the same; direction changes
Green - if both speed and direction change
(Integration: Are you familiar what these colors represent on
road traffic? What do they mean?)

STATION #3: AM I CHANGING VELOCITY OR NOT?

Direction : Read the following statements below and identify whether the
object’s velocity is changing or not. Write Yes if velocity is
changing; No, if not.

Teacher’s Input ( 10 minutes )

Acceleration is a vector quantity that is defined as the rate at which an object changes
its velocity. An object is accelerating if it is changing its velocity.

Velocity is a vector quantity (it has both magnitude and direction) and is
the time rate of change of position (of an object). If there is a change in
speed or direction of an object in motion, there is a change in velocity.

Remember :

No matter how fast an object is going, if it is not changing its speed or direction,
it is not changing its velocity, then it is not accelerating.

ELABORATE (Students apply the information)

• Wrap up the discussion on how a vehicle can change its velocity. Mention about
the gas pedal , brake pedal and the steering wheel and how these controls allow the
vehicle to change its speed or direction.
• Address presented misconception of the learners.
Application :

The ability to accelerate, especially the ability to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph is one of
the typical measure of the power of a car.
The table below shows the time taken for several cars to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph.
Types of Vehicles Model Time (sec)

Cite common causes of car accidents.

EVALUATE (How will you know the students have learned the concept)
Formative assessment (5 minutes):

1. This term refers to how fast or how quick an object changes its
velocity.
A. speed C. acceleration
B. displacement D. displacement
2. Which of the following is a situation that shows acceleration?
A. A car at rest.
B. A cheetah running at a constant speed of 20 mi/hr.
C. A boy running at a constant speed in a circular path.
D. A racing car that maintains its high speed at 100km/hr.

3. You are riding in a car with a constant speed of 40 km/hr and then
the car turned left without changing the speed. Is there an
acceleration that took place?
A. Yes, because the speed of the car did not change.
B. No, change in direction does not pertain to acceleration.
C. No, because the car did not slow down or increase its speed.
D. Yes, because there was a change in direction as the car
turned left.
4. Why does a motorbike accelerate when it is travelling around
in a circular path in a constant speed?
A. Because it speeds up
B. It does not accelerate.
C. Because it slows down
D. Because it changes its direction

5. The following conditions shows that an object accelerates,

except:

A. When the object’s velocity changed.

B. When an object in constant speed changed its direction.
C. When an object in constant speed suddenly slows down.
D. When an object is constantly moving in the same speed
in a straight line.
EXTEND (Deepen conceptual understanding through use in new context

Activity No. 3: “Let’s Accelerate!”

Materials:
activity sheet
ball pen

Procedure:
1. Perform at least three (3) situations that shows acceleration either
by using an object or you may perform it also with your family
members. Kindly take a short video of your experiments and send
it to your teacher through FB messenger.

Guide Questions:
1. Did you perform the experiment correctly? For you what is the
best part of this activity?
2. How did your family members help you in doing the activity?
3. What is the importance of studying acceleration?
