Orientations about ergonomy
Before starting the installation, make sure the sewer, air, water and electric power points are disposed in such a way
as to enable the office to be installed in a space that is in accordance with the ergonomy orientations.
For installation of the equipment in the office, ISO/FDI decided to divide the office in areas. To limit these areas,
imagine the hands of a clock, where the center is the axis of the hands and corresponds to the mouth of a patient
lying on the dental chair positioned horizontally.
Around this center, draw three concentric circles, A, B and C of radiuses of 0.5; 1.0; and 1.5 meters respectively.
The 12 o’clock position is always indicated by the patient’s head, i.e., behind the chair. In this way, the 6-12 o’clock
axis divides the office into two areas: one on the left of the chair (the dentist’s area) and the other on the right of the
chair (the assistant’s area).
The area limited by the A circle, with a radius of 0.5 meters, corresponds to the Transfer Zone, where everything that
is transferred to the patient’s mouth should be located, such as the instruments and the handpieces of the delivery
unit. This area should accomodate both the dentist’s and his assistant’s stools.
The B circle of 1.0 meter radius limits the Useful Working Area (maximum space that can be occupied), which can be
reached with the movement of a stretched arm. In this area the auxiliary table and the delivery unit should be placed.
The C circle of 1.5 meter radius limits the total office area, which should not, therefore, be more than 3 meters wide
in order not to be unergonomical. This area should accomodate the fixed cabinets and the sinks, and the drawers,
when opened, should be kept inside the B circle.
