Resting: aerobic respiration

Vigorous activity: lactic acid fermentation

When student is resting, muscle cells

carry out aerobic respiration. This is
because cells obtain sufficient amount
of oxygen to produce energy. When
student is doing vigorous activity,
muscle cells undergo oxygen debt.
This causes the mitochondria unable
to generate energy. Thus, lactic acid
fermentation takes place in the cytoplasm
to produce 150kJ of energy.
