A newspaper is holding an essay-writing competition with the title:

‘Communication is more than just words’.
Write your entry for this competition.
You may use information from the sources in Section A as well as your own ideas. ( 40 MARKS)

Communication is more than just words. It is the act of listening and responding to the person
talking to you; communication is more than just saying something. It is also listening and
responding appropriately to what you have listened to, but it is also more than that, it is also
understanding what you have just heard to build an appropriate response for the time and
situation. Even if you do not notice that you are making a response considering the situation,
you still are. This is something that the human brain has adapted to so that we do not come off
as insensitive and unempathetic, but rather as caring and understanding. It also goes to show
how, under any circumstances, words hurt people, it is because of specific words that people do
not feel the very best or that they doubt themselves a lot. This is yet another aspect of
communication as the feelings behind the words that you put out also affect how the words
might be interpreted as. Say for example your cousin's grandmother had just died, and when
you send their condolences you feel that your time was wasted as you had plans for the day of
the funeral. The feeling that the cousin might get is that you do not care that somebody
important to him had died and would probably think of you as insensitive. That is all, have a
good day.
