SAN AGUSTIN CHURCH (INTRAMUROS, MANILA)

 It is considered as the oldest stone church in the Philippines which has withstood earthquakes
from 1645 to 1762.
 The church Length is 67.15m(220.3ft) and with the width of 24.93m (81.8ft)
 Its ceiling’s baroque details is an astonishing trompe l’oeil painting and not actual
stone nor wood carvings.
 The tomb of the Spanish Conquistador, Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, is also found in
an alcove near the altar.

The Hallways

 this are long and wide hallways with


enormous paintings depicting the significant events during the
expeditions and images of saints. turns of the hallways with saints
carved from wood

 The Church choir has 68 carved Molave seats with Narra inlaids, an
artistic lectern and parchment cantorals of the 17th and 18th
centuries. The church and its graves were profaned during the British
occupation of Manila in 1762.

RETABLO OF JUAN DE LOS SANTOS

Polychromed Wood, 17th Century

 This “retablo” (altarpiece) was executed in 1617 by the carver


Juan de los Santos, as the main altarpiece of San Agustin Church
in Manila.
 its ionic-corinthian style no longer conformed with the
renovations in the church. that patterned then and it was
fashionable baroque style.
 This “retablo” shows the symmetry of Renaissance architecture, and the broken arch pediment
in the upper part the influence of mannerist style.
The Facistol

 The chamber called ‘Antecoro’ shows the friar’s love for songs and music.
 this room leads to the choir of San Agustin Church with the classic lectern or Facistol which holds the
cantorales or choir book and the restored 18th century pipe organ.

Church of santo tomas de Villanueva (miagao, Iloilo)

 The Miagao Church also known as the Santo Tomás de Villanueva


Parish Church is a Roman Catholic church located in Miagao, Iloilo,
Philippines.
 The church was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on
December 11, 1993 under the collective title Baroque Churches of
the Philippines, a collection of four Baroque Spanish-era
churches.
 After ten years, the church was completed in 1797.
 It was designed with thick walls to serve as protection from
invaders..
 Its ochre color is due to the materials used in constructing the church: adobe, egg, coral and
limestone.
 The church's foundation is 6 meters deep [6] and the massive stone walls at 1.5 meters thick
are intensified through the use of 4 meter thick setback buttresses.

Façade

 The façade of Miagao church consists of an ornately decorated


bas-relief in the middle of two huge watchtower belfries on each
side
 St. Christopher is dressed in local and traditional clothing
carrying the Child Jesus on his back.
 The rest of the façade features the daily life of the people of
Miagao during that time including native flora (like papaya,
coconut and palm tree) and fauna.

BELL TOWER

commissioned by two different priests. On the left side is the older
belfry, the tallest west belfry with four levels.
 the east belfry (three levels) is one level shorter that the west belfry
(four levels).
 The original late 1790s images of St. Tomas of Villanova can also be
found enclosed in a glass case in the rear side of the church.

Sanctuary
 The sanctuary of the church is composed of an altar, tabernacle, retablo and shrines on both
sides.
 The retablo is gold-plated and consists of a crucifix (center), statue of St. Joseph (left), statue
of St. Thomas (right) and a statue of Sto. Niño (top).
 The shrine on the left of the altar houses the Sacred Heart of Jesus while the shrine on the
right of the altar houses the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
