SCOPE OF THE MANUAL

This manual briefly describes the various steps to be taken by the Loco Pilots in case of
loco troubles on line.
The prescribed trouble shooting procedures laid emphasis on quick trouble shooting and
faster clearance of block sections in case of a mid-section failure.
This manual deals with the trouble shooting of locos as single, multiple and consists.

STANDARD INSTRUCTIONS FOR LOCO PILOTS AND TRACTION LOCO

CONTROLLERS

1. During trouble shooting in block section, utmost care should be taken to trouble
shoot the fault, and resume traction within 10 minutes. If unsuccessful
LC/TPC/CONTROL to be informed within next 10 minutes, for assistance. All
efforts should be made to minimize the detentions in block section.

2. In MU/Consist, if one of the loco fails, try to clear block section with good
loco/locos without wasting time for trouble shooting.

3. In case of trouble shooting in MU/Consist locos, the abnormal sign should always
be picked up from leading loco. There after all the observations and interventions
shall be made on the loco which is defective. [Always check the proper fitment of MU
jumpers].
4. When ever HOBA is placed in ‗Off‘ position during trouble shooting in one of the loco
in MU/Consist, HOBA of other locos also to be kept in ‗Off‘ position.

5. (a) During manual operation/wedging contactors or relays, ensure the operation of

auxiliary contacts with full crushing and contactors do not chatter after wedging.

(b) While Q-118 manually operated, release it after all blowers start or after 1
minute.
(c) While operating GR manually, ensure GR on ‗O‘ by anticlockwise movement.
6. LC should be informed at the normal stoppage regarding wedging of
relays/contactors.
(a)FOR WEDGING CONTACTORS: i) Take Full Safety measures. If C105, C106
& C107 are wedged, Q118 is to be
manually operated for closing DJ in ARNO
base loco.
ii) After isolating any auxiliary motor through
rotating switch, ensure its corresponding
contactor is properly opened.

b) FOR WEDGING RELAYS: First switch off battery.
i) If relay Q118 is wedged- block section
may be cleared observing working of all
auxiliaries.
ii) Wedging of Q118 is not Permitted in
trailing Loco/Locos while driving from
leading loco.
iii) During the course of trouble shooting, if
it is required to wedge Q118 on rear loco –
Proceed to rear loco and wedge Q118 on
rear loco. Clear block section only driving
from rear loco observing working of all
auxiliaries following G&SR in force.
iv) Wedging of relay Q-44 & Q-45 is strictly
prohibited.
7. (a) During trouble shooting if MPH is isolated, the train can be worked up to the
destination provided MVRH is working normally and there is no appreciable rise
in the oil level in the transformer gauge.

The following current ratings to be observed.

Starting : 920 amps for 10 minutes.

Continuous : 500 amps

The loco should be withdrawn in a planned manner by the LC.

(b) In case MVRH is isolated- clear block section with the following current ratings.

Starting : 920 Amps for 10 minutes.

Continuous: 500 Amps.

(c) In case MVSL is isolated – Clear block section with the current rating of 500
Amps (Maximum).
8. During trouble shooting if HQOP/HOBA is kept ‗OFF‘ or HQOA is on ‗O‘ a frequent
watch should be kept for any smoke emission from power equipments i.e. RSI
blocks, TMs, BA & TK panel and Auxiliaries etc., as the case may be. LC should be
informed at the first opportunity. LC should withdraw the loco with HQOP/HOBA in
OFF or HQOA on ‗O‘ in a planned manner and direct the loco to the nearest shed for
attention.

9. Whenever any equipment (including TM)/relay is isolated on a locomotive, Loco Pilot

must record in the loco log book and inform LC at the first available opportunity.

LC must ensure planned withdrawal of the loco from service.

10. The Loco Pilots must record all cases of on line loco troubles/other unusual
occurrences/wheel slipping, clearly mention the time loss in block section/station,
time and place of occurrence as well as information given to LC (with name).

11. Check availability/working of following safety equipments.
a. Flasher lights, Auto Flasher light, Marker lights, Head lights, Horns, Wipers,
Speedometer, Sanders and availability of dry sand in the sand boxes.
b. Portable telephone/Fire extinguishers/detonators/wooden wedges.
12. In case of ICDJ & TLTE, failed to rectify according to tripping and Traction failure,
drain out MR & RS pressure, close DJ/VCB and resume traction after rebuilding of
RS & MR pressure.
13. During the course of trouble shooting, if it is required to switch off HBA, IP C.O.C.
must be isolated before switching off HBA and it should be kept normal after
switching ON HBA.

INSTRUCTIONS TO BE FOLLOWED FOR VCD LOCOS
 Vigilance Control Device (VCD) monitors alertness of the engine crew on continues
basis by checking his actions while running a train.
 VCD consists of one control unit, two display unit (one on each cab), relay QVCD &
isolation switch HVCD.
 On putting BL key on BL box (Unlock), the VCD will become active but will remain in
suppressed mode. When pressure in locomotive build up, the VCD will start
functioning.

1. Engine crew should do any of the following operation once in 60 seconds for non
actuation of VCD:
a) Notch up/Notch down by master controller or EEC;
b) Brake applications through A9
c) Application of sander;
d) Pressing VCD acknowledgement push button available for LP.
e) Pressing of foot switch available for LP;
f) Operation of first shunting notch i.e. MPS-1
2. Actuation of VCD:
a) If none of the above operations is done within 60 seconds, a yellow flashing light will glow
for 8 seconds.
b) Even after that no operation is done then an alarm will sound along with yellow flashing light
for another 8 seconds.
c) Even after that (total 76 sec) if no operation is not done then VCD will actuate & apply
penalty brake automatically for 32 seconds and auto regression will take place. During
brake application only yellow flashing light shall glow.
3. Resetting of VCD:
Wait for 32 sec after penalty brake application.
Keep MP on zero position and then push the Reset push button available at driver desk.
(Pressing of reset button before 32 second shall not reset the VCD).

This modification does not alter duties/responsibility of the Loco Pilot as mentioned in GR&SR.

1. Press push button switch ―BPSW‖ provided in each cab for initial charging of BP after EOT
& for quick release of train brakes when applied A9.
BPSW is to be released after BP reaches 5 Kg/cm2.
2. The modification functions only when Reverser key ―MPJ‖ is operated in ―F‖ or ―R‖
direction.
3. To test this modification, press test switches ―TS‖ provided in Cab2 and observe Auto
Flasher Light working, Buzzer sounding, LED indication and auto regression of GR. It
works till it is kept in pressed condition.
4. In case of train parting/ partial uncoupling of BP pipe / during ACP / application RS1/RS2,
Loco Pilot gets Auto Flasher Light with buzzer & LED indication and auto regression of GR.
Loco Pilot should immediately find out the cause of abnormality and act as given in GR and
SR
5. Press reset switch SW to stop flasher light working & buzzer sounding after checking and
ensuring for any abnormality as per GR & SR, LED indication continues to glow till BP
recharges to 4.8 Kg/Cm2.
6. If resetting of only buzzer is required but wants to continue the glowing of flasher light then
LP must manually switch ‗ON‘ Flasher Light before pressing reset switch SW.
7. In any emergency, if auto Flasher Light is not working, put ‗ON‘ flasher light manually.
8. In MU operation during cab changing from one to another loco the following sequence of
operation should be carried out by the Loco Pilot to release the air pressure of P1 pipeline
between MU2B & A9 valve of trailing loco.
o MU2B to be operated to ―Trail‖ position & isolate the L/T cock.
o Apply A9 valve up to full service then isolate the inlet & outlet cut out cock so as to
release BP pressure.
Release A9 and proceed to other loco and energize as per normal
procedure.
In case of malfunctioning of Auto Flasher Light, or if TLTE is experienced, remove
CCLSA fuse and resume traction, work the train. Inform TLC, and
make an entry in the loco logbook.
9. Loco Pilot should not disturb setting of pressure switches/ A9 after the Sheds have set it.
10. Whenever a goods train is controlled by A-9 and while recreating BP, if it takes more than
1minute to come BP pressure up to 4.7 kg/cm2 due to excess leakage on train. This may
be cause for glowing of Auto flasher light. In this case LP is advised to release A9 gradually
/press SW as per condition.
NB :- NEVER USE TEST SWITCH “TS” WHILE TRAIN IS ON RUN

PRECAUTIONS ON RELAY WEDGING
Q50
1. Ensure correct position of ‗J1‘and ―J2‖ as per position of MPJ, CTF1,2,3 are in
―TR‖ side and C145 fully open.
2. Wedge in energised condition.
3. Do not operate ‗MPJ‘-If operated. After Cab changing physically ensure correct
position of ‗J1‘and ―J2‖.
4. Do not use RB.
5. If DJ tripped on notches, or during NO TENSION bring ‗MP‘ to ‗0‘.
Q51
1. If required wedge in de-energised position.( in case of MU/Consist in all locos)
2. Auto regression will not take place by the action of QD, Q20, QRS or PR2.
3. If LSP glowing due to wheel slipping – regress notches to avoid wheel skidding or
rail burnt.
4. Observe BP level- if drops or dropped by A9 - bring ‗MP‘ to ‗0‘.
QRS
Before checking QRS, Ensure – i) BL is unlocked ii) BP pressure 5kg/cm2
iii) RGEB COC is open.
1. If required wedge in energized position ( in case of MU/Consist in all locos)
2. If BP pressure dropped abnormally or dropped by A9/RS – bring MP to ‗‗0‘.
Q100
To be checked after DJ closing.
1. If required wedge in energized position (in case of CCA good but still it is de-
energized )
2. If required wedge in de- energized position (in case of CCA melts even after HOBA
‗OFF‘ or after closing BLVMT in MU loco.)
3. In case wedged Q100 in energized condition open all auxiliary switches before
closing DJ, close one by one giving time gap to avoid over loading on ARNO.
4. If after wedging found ICDJ, ensure MPJ on ―0‘‘ – try to close DJ.
5. If still found ICDJ – Put HBA on ‗0‘ and then on 1 close DJ.
Q118
To be checked after HBA on ‗1‘-
1. If required wedge in energized position.
2. While working ensure all auxiliaries are working (Frequently).
3. Clear block section only.
4. Not to wedge in trailing loco. (If needed drive from trailing loco after wedging.)
Q52
1. If required wedge in de-energized condition.
2. While taking notches by MP quickly bring to ‖N‖ from + or – or quickly release
BPP/BPR while using EEC.
QTD101(SIV fitted LOCO)
1. If required wedge in energized condition.
2 .Close BLCPA/BLCPD after at least 5 seconds SIV starts ( LSCHBA extinguish.)
QCON (SIV fitted loco)
1. If required wedge in energized condition.
2. Close DJ by manual operation of Q118.
3. Close BLCPA/BLCPD after at least 5 seconds SIV starts
QSVM
1. To be wedged either in energized or de-energized condition if SIV fail to restart
after closing BLVMT .Always close BLVMT before closing DJ

AIR DRYER

TWIN TOWER REGENERATING TYPE DESSICANT AIR DRYERS is used to remove

 OIL DROPLETS FROM AIR

 DIRT PARTICLES FROM AIR
 MOISTURE FROM AIR

It is fitted in between MR-2 and MR-3. It comes into function when compressors are
working. While air dryer is in service, slight exhaust of air takes place continuously from
purge valves alternatively. This should not be considered as leakage.

If only MR is not maintaining due to air leakage from air dryer, air dryer may be isolated
– mention in the log book with date and time.

Visual checking of Humidity indicator :

a) Blue colour: Dryer is performing correctly.

b) Lavender: Dryer is suspected for any malfunctioning.
c) White: Possible damaged dryer.
d) Yellow or Brown colour : Damaged dryer. It indicates that desiccant has
been contaminated with oil. Replacement of
coalesci and desiccant is required.

Note :
Service – Cock ―A‘ & ―B‖ open – ―C‖ close.
Isolate -- Cock ―A‘ & ―B‖ close – ―C‖ open.
