 What is Enlightenment Period?


- It started in 1872 to 1898.
- In Philippines, it mirrored the Filipinos desires for reform.
- The Rise of Filipino Nationalism.

Historical Background
- GomBurZa- Father Mariano Gomez, Jose Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora
- The three priests, all graduates of the University of Sto. Tomas, were brilliant
men who used their education to fight for reforms to break the 300-year-old
dominance of the Spanish Government.
- The Filipino spirit was reawakened after 300 years of passivity under Spanish
rule when the three priests Gomburza: Gomez, Burgos, and Zamora were
guillotined without sufficient evidence of guilt.

 Propaganda Movement (1872- 1896)


- It was known in the Philippine History as “Peaceful campaign for reforms”

Propaganda Movement was led by three principal leaders:

1. Dr. Jose Rizal,


2. Marcelo H. Del Pilar
3. Graceano Lopez Jaena,

These Patriots were called Propagandist because they wage their movement by
means of pen and tongue to expose the defects of Spanish rule in the Philippines and the
urgency of reforms to remedy them.

Aims of Propaganda Movement

1. Equality of Filipinos and the Spaniards under the law.


2. To make the Philippines a colony of Spain.
3. Restoration of Filipino representation in the Spanish Cortes.
4. Filipinization of Philippine parishes.
5. Individual Liberties for the Filipinos

- Rizal’s full name: Jose Protacio Rizal Mercado Alonzo y Realonda


- He was born on June 19, 1861 at Calamba Laguna
- Teodoro Alonzo was the first teacher of Jose Rizal.
- He studied at Ateneo D. Manila and started medicine at University of Santo
Tomas (UST)
- He is the greatest novelist of the Movement
- Pen- name: Laong Laan and Dimasalang
- He was killed by musketry in the hands of the Spaniards On December 30, 1896.

 He wrote his poetical masterpiece entitled Mi Ultimo Adios (My Last Farewell), Noli
Me Tangere (1887), El Filibusterismo (1891).
