Submission Date: 26th March 2023 before 11:59:59pm.

Evidence of plagiarism or collusion will be taken seriously and the University

regulations will be applied fully. You are advised to be familiar with the University’s
definitions of plagiarism and collusion.

Instructions:
1. This is an individual Assignment. No duplication of work will be tolerated. Any
plagiarism or collusion may result in disciplinary action, in addition to ZERO mark
being awarded to all involved.
2. You are to submit online of your answers in OAS system and it is your
responsibility to submit your Assignment correctly and timely. OAS system
doesn’t allow re-submission of Assignment. Marks will be awarded for correct
working steps and answers.
3. Please note that your Assignment 2 comes in the form of two online lab
exercises, ie, Lab exercise 1 and lab exercise 2.
4. The total marks for Assignment 2 is 100 and it contributes 25% towards the total
grade.
5. Both Lab exercise 1 & 2 covers the topics in Unit 3.
6. Assignment 2 has to be done individually. Answer all questions in English.
7. Your Assignment must be word processed (single spacing) and clearly lay out.
Any additional appendices or attachments must be placed at the end of the
submitted document and must be referred to in the main body of the Assignment,
or it will not be read by the marker. Marks will be deducted from handwritten
and/or photo snap shot assignments.
8. You must combine the lab reports from your lab exercise 1 and lab exercise 2
and submit them as one single document into OAS. Your lab work will be
assessed using an assessment rubric. Please refer to the last page of this lab
script for the rubric.
9. All files or documents submitted must be labeled with your WOU ID and name.
10. The use of Turnitin is not necessary for this Assignment.

Lab Exercise 1 (DC-to-DC Converter)

Objectives: To analyze the performance and parameters of buck converter and boost
converter using theoretical calculation and software simulation.

Software tool:
LTSpice IV. (free download from http://www.linear.com/designtools/software/)

Note: You are to write a report after completing this lab exercise to present and discuss
your results and findings. Your report must be between 10 – 15 pages long.

Part A: Buck Converter

Instruction: Construct a buck converter on LTSpice IV. Use a voltage source to generate
square waveforms with amplitude 5V to turn on and off the BJT. Use switching
frequency 200kHz. Write down simulation results to complete Table 1. Write procedures
in your report.

Figure 1: Buck converter

Table 1: Buck Converter Results

VS = 3V
VO Theoretical value Simulation value
D ΔV O /V O IL iL ILmax ILmin D ΔV O /V O IL iL ILmax ILmin
2.0V
2.5V

2
Next, draw the switching waveform, the output load voltage VO and inductor current IL
for output voltage VO=2V as simulated by LTSpice IV.

Part B: Boost Converter

Repeat your experiment using a boost converter as in Figure 2. Use switching

frequency 200kHz and amplitude 5V to switch the BJT. Record measurement you have
obtained from LTSpice IV and complete Table 2. Write procedures in you report.

Figure 2: Boost Converter

Table 2: Boost Converter Results

VS = 3V
VO Theoretical value Simulation value
D ΔV O /V O IL iL ILmax ILmin D ΔV O /V O IL iL ILmax ILmin
6.0V
7.0V

Next, draw the switching waveform, output load voltage VO and inductor current IL for
output voltage VO=6V as simulated by LTSpice IV.

Discussion

Compare the simulation results with the theoretical results. Discuss the reasons for the
difference in the theoretical results and the simulation results.

Derive the formula for the buck converter and the boost converter as listed in Appendix
below.

Propose a method to minimize the difference between the theoretical results and the
experimental results.

3
Discuss the endurance of both converters against short-circuit fault.

Conclusion

Summarize the important outcomes you have learned from this laboratory practical.
