COLD WAR IMPORTANT POLICIES

 Salami tactics: A divide and conquer process of threats and alliances used to overcome
opposition. An aggressor can influence and eventually dominate a landscape, typically
political, in piecemeal fashion. Opposition is eliminated “slice by slice”. Stalin created
this in eastern Europe in 1946-47, Stalin made sure the Communist governments came
to power in all the countries of eastern Europe (the countries which Russia had
conquered in 1945). The US saw this as aggressive and felt like these countries were
not really being liberated by the USSR.
 NSC-68: it was a top-secret report that mentioned how the US wanted to stop the
spread of communism all over Europe through implementing a more powerful military
and weaponry defence. The Korean war outbreak was used as an excuse to officially
implement on military support.
 Berlin Crisis: a conflict between the US and USSR. Stalin blocked berlin and build up the
berlin war to prevent the western access to that city. As a response, the UK and US
initiated the airlift to keep sending food and supplies to the city. SED was an
intimidation to the West.
 Korean War: conflict between North and South Korea. At least 2.5 people lost their
lives. It became international when North Korea attacked South Korea, and this
intensified the tension between the US and USSR. The important conflict that started
the satellite conflicts between the US and USSR without directly facing each other.
 Sino-Soviet split: USSR and China were “friends” after signing the pact. The Soviet
Union started criticizing a policy implemented within China. USSR felt threaten by Mao
because he felt like Mao wanted to become the communist leader. The Soviet refused
to help China because both the capitalist and communist sides did not want to start a
“war”, so they just supported them with some supplies and resources, but did not fully
get involved. In 1968, the Sino-Soviet split occurs.
