PIPING WALL THICKNESS CALCULATION

ASME B31.3

1. Purpose of this document

The calculations cover the piping wall thicknesses required as a result of the hoop stresses generated by internal
pressure and the extra wall thickness. The recommended wall thicknesses have been determined by
"rounding up" to the next available pipe size in ASME B31.3-2002
The piping parameters used in these calculations are based on current project data

2. Applicable Codes & Standards

- ANSI B31.3 Process piping
- ANSI B16.5 Pipe Flanges and Flanged Fittings
- ANSI B36.10M Welded and Seamless Wrought Steel Pipe
- ASTM A53 Standard Specification for Pipe, Steel, Black and Hot-Dipped, Zin-Coated, Welded and Seamless
- ASTM A106 Seamless Carbon Steel Pipe for High Temperature Service
- API SPEC 5L Line pipe specification

3. Overview / Objective
There are two objectives of these piping calculations
- To determine the minimum wall thickness requirements for the piping based on the hoop stresses
- To calculated wall thickness sheet

4. Materials
The materials recommended using for the project shall be Carbon steel, galvanized Carbon steel, stainless steel and Low
Temperature carbon steel (LTCS) in according to ANSI / ASTM' recommendations, such as:
- ASTM A 106 Gr. A or B
- ASTM A 53 Gr. A or B
- API 5L
- ASTM A 333 Gr. 1 or 6
- Other special materials will be defined depending on each project's requirement

5. Calculations
- Basing on ANSI/ASME B31.3, the applicable formular for piping wall thickness calculation is:

P *Do
t=
2 * (S * E * W  P Y )
treq = t + CA
Where:
+ t: Minimum required thickness (in). + W: Stress reduction factor due to the weld link (if any).
+ P: Internal design pressure (Psi) + Y: Overload coefficient of the material ( t<D/6)
+ D0: Pipe outside diameter (in). + E: Quality factor.
+ S: Tensile stress of the material at design temp. (Psi). + Ca: Corrosion allowance (in).
- The size of pipe will be using: 1/2", 1.1/2", 2", 2.1/2", 3", 4", 6", 8", 10", 12"….
- Pressure rating: ANSI 150, ANSI 300, ANSI 600, ANSI 900, ANSI 1500 or ANSI 2500

6. Results
- The results of selected pipe wall thickness for this project shown in appendixes

7. Appendixes
