Pokhara University

Semester- Spring
Level: Bachelor Year: 2022
Programme: BE Full Marks: 100
Course: Design of steel &Timber(Limit State) Pass Marks: 45
Time: 3hrs
Candidates are required to give their answers in their own words as far as
practicable.
The figures in the margin indicate full marks.
Attempt all the questions.
1. Find the maximum load ‘W’ inclined at 60° to the horizontal from the bracket
shown below. The connection is made with 8-20mm black bolts and the plate
connected are 12mm thick. 15

2. Design a builtup column composed of two channels placed back to back carrying
axial load of 1345kN. The column having a length of 7.5m is effectly held In
position at both end but restrained against rotation at one end only. Use single
lacing system. 15
3. A conference hall of 8m×9m is provided with a 120mm thick R.C.t. slab over
rolled steel beams 3m centre to centre. Roof finishing 20mm thick is also
provided over the slab with live load of 1.5kpa.
Consider the joist are resting over 300mm thick walls. Design an ‘Intermediate
beam which depth should not excee d 600mm. Take unit weight of R.C.C slab
and Roof finishing as 24kN/m3. Assume the compression flange in laterally
supported. 15
4. Design an Angle purlin for a pitched roof with slope 1 in 3, The purlins may be
considered simply supported with a span of 4.0m between roof trusses at a
spacing of 1.8m. The total dead load, including purlin weight is 0.45 KN\m 2 and
the imposed load in 0.65kN/m2 on plan. Use the grade of steel is Fe410.

5. a. Design slab base for a column section consisting of ISHB 300 carrying an
axial load of 500KN. The safe bearing pressure of soil is 300 kN/m 2 and
permissible bearing pressure on concrete is 4000kN/m 2. 7
b. A compression member made of 200×200 mm dodar wood. The member is of
2.7m long. The member is subjected to a compressive to axial load of 16kN and
bending moment of 2kN-m. Check the safety of column. 8
6. Design a tension member made two unequal angles placed back to back with
their longer legs connected on the both sides of the gusset plate by 16mm dia
botts of grad 4.6. Design the end connection and sketch the joint showing pitch
and edge distance etc. 15
7. Write short Note on: (Any three) 10
a. Web crippling and web buckling
b. Components of Roof trusse
c. Modes of failures of plate grider
d. Calculation of loads on Roof truss.
e. Elements of plate Girder
