Introduction
There are several steel constructions companies in Bangladesh that specialize in the design, fabrication,
and construction of steel structures. These companies typically have the expertise and equipment
necessary to handle a wide range of projects, including the construction of bridges, buildings, and other
structures. The construction of steel building began for the first time with the inception of Chittagong
Export Processing Zone in 1984. Now such building is a common scene in all the industrial areas.

Steel construction is a popular choice in Bangladesh due to its strength, durability, and versatility. Steel
structures can be designed to meet the specific needs and requirements of a project, and they can be
easily adapted or modified as needed. In addition, steel is resistant to fire, wind, and other natural
disasters, making it a safe and reliable choice for construction projects in Bangladesh.

Present Market Scenario

Steel buildings are gradually making a strong hold in Bangladesh's construction sector, as around 16
companies construct over 100 such buildings every year on average. Sector people put the annual
turnover of the construction segment at about Tk 1,000 crore. Besides factory buildings, some corporate
offices like Grameenphone headquarters in Gulshan in the capital and hotels such as 20-storey Hotel
Sarena are some other examples of steel building.

According to industry insiders, around 100 companies are now providing PEB solutions in Bangladesh. At
least 20 companies have entered the market in the last five years.

To construct it, all equipment, generally imported from Korea, Japan, China, Russia, and India, are first
engineered at a factory as per sizes and later assembled on the construction site, which is why it is also
known as pre-engineered building. Such buildings are very popular across the world mainly because it
gives a huge architectural flexibility.

Every year a constructor receives 6-7 offers to build steel establishments, the heights of which range
from 2 to 7 story. Presently garment-related industry owners are the main customers for those
buildings, as they do not like to wait for years to get their industry buildings completed. (The Daily Star)

3
The projects, worth around Tk50,000 crore, include metro-rail stations, Dhaka Hazrat Shahjalal
International Airport's third terminal, expansion of Osmani International Airport, Sylhet, and Shah
Amanat International Airport at Chittagong. Around 30 percent of the total cost of these projects will be
on steel structures, according to officials and sector players.

Businesses use PEB for their manufacturing plants to save time and cost because these structures cost
less than half of concrete structures. PEB makers supply all components to the plant site, and then
assemble them with nuts, bolts, and anchor bolts.

The PEB industry in Bangladesh has grown considerably in the last decade riding on rapid economic
growth and industrialization. The manufacturing sector's contribution rose to 35 percent of the
country's GDP in the last fiscal year, up from around 25 percent a decade ago.

The steel structure business also saw rapid growth with it. The market almost doubled in the last five
years, according to the Steel Building Manufacturers Association of Bangladesh. The size of the market
was around Tk2,500 crore in the 2017-18 fiscal year. Now local companies hold around 85-90 percent of
market share, and foreign firms make up the rest. (The Business Standard)

Operating Cost
The existing business and design team is capable of performing when it comes to designing small scaled
projects. The business team can work on the outreach of the service and create a channel for affiliation.

At the time of large scaled projects and if projects appears in a frequent basis then the business will
require a detailer, sales manager, project manager and a site manager. The salary of these personnel’s
will be considered as operating cost but initially it is not required.

Fabrication Place
All the fabrication works needs to be done in the warehouse/workshop of known factories. If there is no
direct company/service provider available, ETCBL needs to search companies/factories where an
agreement can be done to conduct fabrication works in their factory.

Conclusion
These are just a few examples of the many steel engineering and construction companies operating in
Bangladesh. As it is a time-consuming, efficient and earthquake resistive solutions, so many businesses
like RMG’s. pharmaceuticals, corporate industries are preferring pre-engineered structures for their
structures. The steel re-rolling industries in Bangladesh are also growing rapidly due to the increasing
demand for steel products in the construction and infrastructure sectors.

It should be noticed that the steel industry in Bangladesh has faced a lot of criticism for their
environmental issues and labor rights abuse. To improve the standard, Government of Bangladesh and
the international organization working to improve the standard of the steel industry in Bangladesh.
