1/ Definite pronouns

We often use reflexive pronouns when the subject and the object of a verb are the same.
• We can add a reflexive pronoun for emphasis when it's unusual or different.
He wants to pass his driving test so that he can drive himself to work.
• We can use reflexive pronouns to emphasize that someone does it personally, not
anybody else.
The door was definitely locked. I locked it myself.
• We can also use a reflexive pronoun together with the noun it refers to in order to
emphasize it.
We talked to the manager herself, and she agreed to give us our money back.
By + reflexive pronoun
• We can use by + reflexive pronoun to mean alone.
He usually goes on holiday by himself.

Situation: Andrew and Lucy go to a football match.

Andrew: Hi, how are you? Ready to go?


Lucy: Yes ready to go and really excited.
Andrew: It should be a good match and great atmosphere.
Lucy: Yes. It’s always good when the local football team plays at home.
Andrew: I love being able to walk to the stadium with all the other supporters.
Lucy: Everyone is excited and hoping that the team will win.
Andrew: It’s good to see all the scarves and football shirts.
Lucy: And then when we get here to the turnstile and get into the ground with our ticket. I
