ARTS 3

Third Grading Period

TEXTURE is the perceived surface quality of a work of art. It is the feel of a surface. It is the quality of
something that can be decided by touch. It refers to how a piece of art feels when it’s touched.
It refers to how something feels including its appearance (the way something looks/hitsura) and
consistency (meaning something stays the same or is done in the same way or looks the same/hindi
nagbabago).
 Glass, wood, rock and sand all have different textures.
 Words that we use to describe texture include soft, hard, rough, smooth and glossy.

 Texture in art concerns the surface quality of a piece of work.

It can be perceived in two ways:

1. through touch (physical texture); and
2. through sight (visual texture).

 We can perceive it through the sense of touch or visually or both.

Texture in Art is the element of art that refers to the way things feel or look, that is as if you could feel
if touched,
Texture is the character of a surface and it is both tactile and visual.
Tactile (adjective) /ˈtæk.taɪl/
 related to the sense of touch

 If something is tactile, it has a surface that is pleasant or attractive to touch.

Tactile texture is the tactile quality of a surface such as rough, smooth, sticky, fuzzy, soft or slick.
A real texture is one you can actually feel with your hand.
It can also be created by an artist doing a
collage.
COLLAGE - a piece of art made by sticking
various different materials (iba-iba) such as
photographs and pieces of paper or fabric
on to a backing (something that forms the back or is placed at or attached to the back)

Visual (noun) /ˈvɪʒ.u.əl/

 related to the sense of sight (seeing)
 something such as a picture, photograph, etc.

Visual qualities are qualities that are visible (nakikita) and are used to express the artist’s idea of his
work. Visual qualities include color, shape, texture, form, etc. They are important elements that an
artist uses in his art work.
Visual texture is a visual quality of a surface. It is the result from painting or drawing as the real
texture. Visual texture is an illusion of texture created by an artist. Paint can be manipulated to give
the impression of texture while the paper surface remains smooth and flat.
The paintings look as if they are rough. This is the
impression we get. But the truth is that the surface of the
materials/art works is still smooth and flat. It is just the
illusion of texture created by the artists.
Remember, an actual texture is something you can feel with your hand to be rough, bumpy, sharp or
smooth. A visual texture tries to create the illusion of this feeling by making marks or images that
capture this feeling. In reality, the drawing of a rough or sharp surface is always smooth, as you can
confirm by rubbing your hand over the paper on which the drawing is made.
We can also divide texture in another category – natural and artificial.
Natural Texture
 the texture we find and it is not made by humans;
 are those ones already existent or those that we can touch
and see;

Examples: stone, sand, rice, rock, leaf of a plant, bark of a tree, etc.
Artificial Texture
 the texture made by humans

Examples: ballpen, toothbrush, umbrella, etc.
