CHAPTER l
The Problem and Related Literature

Review Related Literature

This section presents decisive scrutiny of the results of the related studies

conducted by the previous researchers. It also presents selected views and thoughts of

authorities which have to bear to the present study. Moreover, the findings of significant

studies are discussed to provide a clearer view of the problem a comprehensive

understanding of the study conducted. Presented in this chapter are the three (3) sub

variables namely: individual learning, cooperative learning, and mix of individual

learning and cooperative learning.

Individual Learning

Particularly in higher education (HE). For more than 20 years, there has been a

significant movement worldwide to transform HE teaching through a variety of ideas

encourage self-directed learning (Laurillard, 2013). Today, the term "independent

learning" is associated with or included in a number of other educational concepts and

policy agendas of current relevance, such as "personalization," "student-centered

learning," and "ownership" of learning (DCSF, 2008). Independent learning is becoming

increasingly important in the United Kingdom, and it is one of the key components of
personalization, which the government sees as essential to the ongoing development of

a system of education, particularly school education, that promotes high quality and

lifelong learning, as well as social equity and cohesion (DfES, 2006).

Cooperative Learning

Cooperative learning is the learning method where the students study together

as small groups and help to each other’s learning (Slavin, 2015).

Statement of the Problem

This study specifically measures the level of Learning Preferences of Grade 10

students in Individual learning, cooperative learning, and mix of individual learning and

cooperative learning. Specifically, this study will seek to the following question:

1. What is the demographic profile of Grade 10 students in terms of:

1.1 Age; and

1.2 Gender?
2. What is the level of preferences in learning of Grade 10 students in terms of:

2.1 Individual learning;

2.2 Cooperative learning; and

2.3 Mix of Individual learning and Cooperative learning?

3. What preferences of learning has the highest mean score?

4. What preferences of learning has the lowest mean score?

Hypothesis

To objectively answer the previous problems, the following null hypothesis is

made:

Ho: There is no significant difference between the respondents when classified

according to age and gender.

Theoretical Framework

This chapter discusses theoretical claims about various group learning

procedures as well as evidence for their efficacy. Learning is a term with definition than

theorist; however most would agree on some fundamental distinction. In its most

extreme forms, the position maintains that all “meaningful” conceptual change is self
directed. Theories of cognitive development that emphasize other direction almost

exclusively are the polar opposite of self directing theories.

According to this theories, conceptual development has primarily social origin.

Cooperative learning is most closely associated with educational psychology research

that is concerned with alternatives to traditional classroom organizational structure. The

social plane can be gradually removed from cooperative learning setting as they are

individualized, internalized, or adopted as interdependent cognition. It is unclear

whether children can benefit from systematic instruction, such as a type of reciprocal

teaching in which modeling and support are provided for acquisition of complex

argument rules. (Ann L. Brown, Annemarie S Palincar 2018 )

Conceptual Framework

This quantitative study has the independent variable which is the factors affecting

to the Learning Preferences of Grade 10 students. In addition, the dependent variable is

the Learning Preferences of Grade 10 students.

Significance of the Study

This study will be conducted to measure the level of Learning Preferences of

Grade 10 students in Saint Micheal School of Padada to potentially enhance their

studies.

Students. The direct recipients of this research are the students, specifically the grade

10 students, on which learning approaches of studying they would most likely prefer in

either of the two: cooperative or individual learning. Any improvement of the students in
their learning strategy can pave the way to producing a preferable/comfortable method

of learning for their academic performance.

Teachers. This research will also benefit the teachers' grade 10 students' teachers and

general educational teachers. Teachers, in particular, who want their students to learn

in the most efficient and enjoyable way possible, the output of this research might

benefit teachers in relation to the activities they would give to their students.

Researchers. The future researchers are also the recipients of this particular research

itself. They can obtain ideas from this field of study for their own research in their future

practical research itself.
