Ki Hajar Dewantara
Ki Hajar Dewantara Born in Pakualaman, May 2, 1889, is the son of GPH Soerjaningrat or grandson of
Sri Paku Alam III., Ki Hajar Dewantara is a Pakualaman noble family.
As a Javanese nobleman, he completed his ELS (Europeesche Lagere School) education, which is a
low school for European children.
Furthermore, he had the opportunity to enter STOVIA (School tot Opleiding Voor Inlandsche Artsen)
which is commonly known as the Javanese Doctor's School.
However, due to his health condition, Ki Hajar Dewantara did not even graduate from this school.
In addition, he was involved in the journalism profession, working in several newspapers and
magazines at that time.
His magazines or newspapers, among others, Sediotomo, Midden Java, De Expres, Oetosan Indies,
Kaoem Moeda, Tjahaya Timoer, and Poesara, issued Socio-Political criticisms of the bumiputras to
the invaders.
His soul as an educator has been embedded in his soul and was realized by establishing the Taman
Siswa College in 1922 to educate the Bumiputra community.
As a figure from the Pakualaman noble family, Ki Hajar Dewantara has a very simple personality and
is very close to the people.
His soul was united through education and local Javanese culture in order to achieve socio-political
equality in colonial society.
These forces are the basis for him to fight for the unity and equality of cultural nationalism to
political nationalism.
His determination to fight for Indonesian nationalism through education was carried out with
resistance to the Illegal Schools Act 1932.
Namely the law that limited the movement of Indonesian education nationalism until it was finally
abolished by the colonial government.
It was his struggles in the fields of politics and education that the government of the Republic of
Indonesia respected him with various positions in the Indonesian government.
In addition, Ki Hajar Dewantara was appointed Minister of Education and Culture in 1950.
He also received a doctorate honoris causa from Gadjah Mada University and was appointed a
National Hero in 1959.
Ki Hajar Dewantara died on April 26, 1959 and was buried in the Taman Siswa Wijaya Brata family
cemetery, Yogyakarta.

kesetaraan sosial-politik dalam masyarakat kolonial.
