Laboratory Exercise No. 2- Determination of

Moisture Content and Specific Gravity

Laboratory exercise 2.1: Moisture Content

In almost all soil tests natural moisture content of the soil is to be
determined. The knowledge of the natural moisture content is essential in all
studies of soil mechanics. To sight a few, natural moisture content is used in
determining the bearing capacity and settlement. The natural moisture content
will give an idea of the state of soil in the field.

Interpretation and Reporting

Result:

The natural moisture content of the soil sample in varies. As shown in the table above, we
can say that the moisture content of a sample actually depends on the place where the soil sample
is taken, the weight that the group decided to sample, the type of soil, and also to the moisture
that a batch carries.his is the reason that in order to get the amount of water a soil contain, the
container, dry soil, and wet soil had to weighed. Also, the factors stated above, greatly affects
the moisture/water content of the soil. Since our group got the sample near a vegetation, and also
due to its color, and odor, it is identified as an organic type of soil. Which is from what we know,
compressible, and has a high water retention. The higher water retention and the more it is
compressible
.. denotes a higher amount of water or air it can carry.

Laboratory Exercise 6.2: Specific Gravity

Specific gravity G is defined as the ratio of the weight of an equal volume of distilled
water at that temperature both weights taken in air. The knowledge of specific gravity
is needed in calculation of soil properties like void ratio, degree of saturation etc.

Interpretation:

Unless or otherwise specified specific gravity, values reported shall be based on water
at 27°C. So, the specific gravity at 27°C = K*Sp. gravity at Tx °C.
