FINAL TEST 1º BACHILLERATO 2021-2022 – READING AND WRITING

SURNAMES: ……………………………………………………………….. NAME: …………………………….

Read the text and answer the questions that follow.

A Man Without Money

I You may complain that you don’t have enough money, but could you live without any money at all? This is
what Mark Boyle has done.

II Mark studied economics at university and then went on to manage various organic food companies.
However, he felt that even environmentally-friendly businesses were not doing enough for the environment
and decided that he would have to make radical changes in his life in order to make a difference in the
world. He believed that people would be less wasteful if they had to cultivate their own food and make their
own furniture, so he decided to adopt this lifestyle.

III In 2008, he moved into a caravan on an organic farm. He often ate whatever he could find, grew his own
food and cooked it over a fire. He brushed his teeth with crushed fish bones that he mixed with seeds, and
he even used old newspaper instead of a toilet roll. His home was heated by wood, and his laptop and
phone were powered by the sun. He travelled by bike and wore clothes that people had thrown away.

IV As he reached his second moneyless year, Mark was happier and healthier than he had ever felt before. He
claimed to miss nothing, except perhaps a pint of beer with friends in the pub; in fact, Mark was so
enthusiastic about his new lifestyle that he decided to establish a moneyless village. Ironically, it will be
funded by money earned by his book, The Moneyless Man: Why I Live Without Money.

V Of course, living without money may not suit everyone. However, most people might want to stop and re-
evaluate their lifestyle with Mark’s favourite quotation from the ancient Greek philosopher, Epicurus, in mind:
“If you want to make a man rich, do not add to his wealth but subtract from his desires.”
