Welding safety Overview

An estimated 56200 employees are at risk for exposure to chemical and physical hazards of
welding

There are numerous health hazards associated with exposed fumes, gases, and ionizing
radiation formed or released during welding, cutting, and brazing, including
Heavy metal poisoning
Lung cancer
Metal fume fever
Flash burn, and other

Symptoms
Respiratory disturbances
Infection
Fever
Pneumonia
Trembling, nausea, vomiting

Welders should be using appropriate protective clothing which should include, shielding, a
helmet, with a filtered lens, fire resistance gloves, boots, leather spats, felt skull cap or beret,
and preferably overalls

Protective ensemble
Eyesaftey shield
No pockets
Full sleeves
Leather Apron or shirt outside trousers no cuffs and safety shoes

The arc itself is dangerous with 6000 degrees will burn you
The intense ultraviolet and infra-red rays can be harmful to both the welder and workers

Heat and gas make the container explode as a result of welding or cutting work. Know your
surroundings.

Transporting, moving, and storing:

Valve protection caps in place and secure
Make sure they stay upright.

Make sure that the cylinder be doubled chained by the moving tool
Make sure the cylinder valve is closed when done and move them.
Make sure the cylinder is in an upright position
Install a shield to protect the cylinder from sparks or hot slag
No striking the electrode to the cylinder to strike an arc

Training
Always open the cylinder valve slowly to prevent damage to the regulator
Only open the cylinder 1 and ½ turns
Leave the valve wrench in place when the cylinder is in use
Close cylinder valve

Arc welding
Personal protection
Meletrode holders must be designed for the purpose and capable of carrying and maximum rate
electrode current
Only fully insulate holder to contact hands
If fly off and hits you, you could go to cardio arrest
Arc welding cables are completely insulated and flexible-type cables in need of repair are not
allowed

Electrodes removed from the holder when unattended

Not hot electrode dipped in water
If not working then bring it to the supervisor
Always shield operation to protect worker's eyes
Move objects to be welded to a safe location
Remove fire hazards from the area
No welding where paint or dust hazards are presented
Always have the fan on when welding
When grinding, set the helmets to 3, when welding, put it to 10-12
