Date: 1/18/2023
Subject/ grade level: PE/7th Grade
Lesson objective(s): 7-3.10 Learning Target: I can identify exercises to strengthen major muscle groups.

ISTE 1.3d build knowledge by actively exploring real-world issues and problems,
developing ideas and theories, and pursuing answers and solutions.

Differentiation strategies to meet diverse learner needs:

Students with physical disabilities will be allowed to give oral report in response to questions and demonstrations.

ENGAGEMENT Goal:
• Describe how the teacher will capture students’ interest. Students will learn
• What kind of questions should the students ask themselves after the engagement? by watching and
participating in the
Introduction exercise video

Students will view and participate by following along with the exercise video. After the video students should
ask themselves to associate which exercises strengthened the muscles of the arms, chest, shoulders, back,
trunk, and legs.

EXPLORATION
• Describe what hands-on/minds-on activities students will be doing.
• Activity – After the video students will be placed into groups and asked to write down which exercises strengthened the associated body
part.
• List “big idea” conceptual questions the teacher will use to encourage and/or focus students’ exploration
• The teacher will also take students through each exercise again asking them to focus on which body segments are being trained by each
exercise.

EXPLANATION
• Student explanations should precede introduction of terms or explanations by the teacher. What questions or techniques will the teacher use to help
students connect their exploration to the concept under examination?
• The teacher will help connect the student’s association of muscle groups with exercises by coaching the students through the exercises
as they demonstrate them for the teacher.
• List higher order thinking questions which teachers will use to solicit student explanations and help them to justify their explanations.
• What muscles groups does the Squat strengthen?
• What muscles groups does the Push-up strengthen?
• What muscle groups does the Sit-up strengthen?
• If I wanted to strengthen one leg at a time which exercise, should I select?
• If I wanted to strengthen the back which exercise(s) should I select?

ELABORATION
• Describe how students will develop a more sophisticated understanding of the concept.
• Students will learn to associate basic movement patterns with muscle group activation and strengthening
• Students will learn to perform each exercise correctly
• What vocabulary will be introduced and how will it connect to students’ observations?
• Anatomical vocabulary will be introduced to the students to indicate body sections and muscle groups
• Technical vocabulary will be used to indicate exercise technique, muscle action, and movement patterns

• Students will demonstrate in written form that they understand how to apply the knowledge they have gained.
• Students will perform 3 exercises for the teacher when prompted by being asked to perform and anme an exercise to strengthen the arms,
legs, and trunk
• This should be embedded throughout the lesson as well as at the end of the lesson
