Assignment 4

Note: Take modulus of elasticity of material (E) 200 GPa and Poisson’s ratio (ν) 0.3 in the
questions required. Assume suitable data if missing.
Q 1. A thin square plate has been shown in Fig. 1. For the boundary condition shown,
determine the displacement components at nodes 2, 3, and 4; when the plate is discretized
by two triangular elements. Use isoparametric element formulation to solve the problem
and determine the stress-strain components in the plate. Use two point Gauss Quadrature
for numerical integration.

Q 5. Consider steady-state heat conduction in a square region of side 2 m. Assume that the
medium has thermal conductivity k and uniform heat energy generation Q0. For the
boundary conditions and mesh shown in Fig. 5 determine the temperatures at nodes 1 and
4 by using isoparametric formulation.

Q 6. In reference to Fig. 5 take the same problem domain and discretize the same with help
of four noded quadrilateral elements. Now by using isoparametric formulation determine
the unknown temperatures of the corners and at intersection of the two diagonals of the
square domain. Interpolation functions are,
