Priorities in the 1st Few
days in life of NEWBORN
High-quality universal newborn health care is the right
of every newborn everywhere. Babies have the right to
be protected from injury and infection, to breathe
normally, to be warm and to be fed.

All newborns should have access to essential newborn

care, which is the critical care for all babies in the first
days after birth. Essential newborn care involves
immediate care at the time of birth, and essential care
during the entire newborn period. It is needed both in
the health facility and at home.
•Immediate care at birth (delayed cord
clamping, thorough drying, assessment of
breathing, skin-to-skin contact, early initiation of
breastfeeding)
•Thermal care
•Resuscitation when needed
•Support for breast milk feeding
•Nurturing care
•Infection prevention
•Assessment of health problems
•Recognition and response to danger signs
•Timely and safe referral when needed
Altered Gestational Age and Birth weight

1. Gestational age

•Term: birth between 37 and 42 weeks

•Pre-term: birth prior to 37 completed
weeks of gestation
•Post-term: birth after 42 weeks of gestation
•Appropriate for gestational age (AGA): the baby's
weight is appropriate for the gestational age (weight
between 10th and 90th percentile)
•Small for gestational age (SGA): a baby's weight is less
than expected for the gestational age (weight less
than 10th percentile). Unlike a preterm baby, an SGA
baby is small because of slow growth resulting from an
inherent fetal growth retardation.
•Large for gestational age (LGA): a baby's weight is
more than expected for the gestational age (weight
more than the 90th percentile).
