The Passion of St.

John the Baptist

St. John the Baptist is one of the few saints who is celebrated twice
during the liturgical year in the Catholic church. On June 25 th, we celebrate his
birthday because he was sanctified in his mother’s womb. On August 29 th, we
celebrate his Martyrdom. Martyr is a Greek word, and it means witness. St.
John witnessed Jesus Christ with his words, deeds, and blood.
- His Words
He was the forerunner, the precursor of Our Lord. He alone pointed out
Jesus, the Lamb of God, who brings the forgiveness of sins. Saint Andrew and
Saint John were among those who heard him, and followed Jesus.
He was a voice crying in the desert, a prophet, bringing the message
from God to the people. In his preaching he defends the Matrimony, justice,
and truth.
- His Deeds
The Gospels do not mention miracles of Saint John the Baptist. They
mention his preaching, the baptisms of the multitudes of people and the
baptism of Jesus. The Gospel also refers to Saint John’s life of austerity,
penance, and prayer in the wilderness. He leapt for joy in his mother’s womb in
the presence of Jesus and Mary. His zeal for the Lord was alive. Saint John’s life
was a prologue to his preaching. His holiness of life made his words credible.
And the crowds following him paid attention and believed his words.
- His Blood
He powerfully sealed his teaching by the shedding of his blood.
I would like to finish with the words of the collect prayer from The
Passion of St. John the Baptist Mass:
“O God, who willed that Saint John the Baptist should go ahead of your
Son both in his birth and in his death, grant that, as he died a Martyr for truth and
justice, we, too, may fight hard for the confession of what you teach.”

Martirio de San Juan el Bautista
San Juan el Bautista es uno de los pocos santos que se celebra dos veces
durante el año litúrgico de la Iglesia Católica. El 25 de Junio celebramos su
Nacimiento porque él fue santificado en el vientre de su madre. El 29 de Agosto
celebramos su Martirio. Mártir es una palabra que viene del griego y significa
testigo. San Juan fue testigo de Jesucristo con sus palabras, hechos y sangre.
- Sus Palabras
Fue el precursor de Nuestro Señor. Solo él entre todos los profetas señaló a
Jesús, el Cordero de Dios, que trae el perdón de los pecados. San Andrés y San
Juan estaban entre los que lo escucharon y siguieron a Jesús.
Él es la voz que clamaba en el desierto, el profeta que llevaba el mensaje de
Dios al pueblo. En su predicación defiende el matrimonio, la justicia y la verdad.
- Sus Hechos
Los Evangelios no mencionan milagros de San Juan el Bautista. Mencionan
que predicaba, bautizaba a las multitudes y que bautizó a Nuestro Señor. El
Evangelio también relata la vida de austeridad, penitencia y oración de San Juan
en el desierto. Él saltó de alegría en el vientre de su madre en presencia de Jesús y
María. Su celo por el Señor estaba vivo. La vida de San Juan fue un prólogo de su
predicación. Su santidad de vida hizo que sus palabras fueran creíbles. Y la
multitud que lo seguía escuchó sus palabras y creyó en sus palabras.
- Su Sangre
Él selló poderosamente su enseñanza con el derramamiento de su sangre.
Quisiera terminar con las palabras de la oración colecta de la Misa del
Martirio de San Juan el Bautista:
“Oh, Dios, tú has querido que san Juan Bautista fuese el Precursor de tu
Hijo en su nacimiento y en su muerte, concédenos que, así como él murió mártir
de la verdad y de la justicia, luchemos nosotros valerosamente por la confesión de
tu verdad.”
