Teaching Statement

My teaching career started at The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA, during 1986-1987
academic year when we introduced a Computer Graphics course for Mechanical Engineering
students for the first time. I taught the Computer Graphics course in full capacity for three
semesters. At the same time, I was supervising seven computer labs of the Computer Aided
Engineering Network at the University of Michigan, which were recently established at that
time.

After joining KFUPM in 1989, I have taught 18 different courses in both undergraduate and
graduate level. These include; Mechanical Engineering Drawing (ME 200), Dynamics (ME
201), Thermodynamics I (ME 203), Thermodynamics II (ME 204), Materials Science (ME
205), Heat Transfer (ME 305), Energy Conversion (ME 423), Compressible Fluid Flow (ME
425), Turbomachinery (ME 427), Refrigeration (ME 431), Advanced Fluid Mechanics (ME
532), Gas Dynamics (AE 325), Computational Methods in Aerospace Engineering (ME 450),
MS Thesis and PhD Dissertation. My teaching evaluations have been among the 40% in ME
Department throughout my teaching career at KFUPM.

I have coordinated a number of times the multi-section courses such as ME 200, ME 201, ME
205, ME 203, ME 204, ME 315, and ME 425.

I have supervised 3 Ph.D. students and participated in the thesis dissertation committee of
another 6 Ph.D. students.

I have supervised 8 MSc. students and participated in the thesis committee of another 32 MSc.
students.

I coordinated the Summer Training program in the Mechanical Engineering Department during
the period January 1993 to August 1998. Coordinated the summer training of a total of 506
Mechanical Engineering summer training students during these SIX years.

I served as the Thermo-Fluid Group Coordinator in the Mechanical Engineering Department

during the period September 1995 to September 1998. In addition, I participated in the
coordination of the Aeronautical Group, Turbomachinery Group, and Nanotechnology Group.

I carried out a number of tasks towards establishing a new Aerospace Engineering Department
at KFUPM. The tasks include Curriculum development, Course development, Lab
development, etc.
I have supervised 46 Senior Projects (ME 411, ME 412, ME 414, and ME 416).

I have supervised 92 COOP (ME 351) students.

I developed and/or participated in the development of several courses.

I proposed for the first time to introduce computer usage (AutoCAD software) in ME
200 (Mechanical Engineering Drawing) course, which led to the establishment of ME
Drawing and Graphics (ME 210) afterwards.

I proposed a Computational Heat Transfer course as an elective in ME curriculum. This

proposal led to the establishment of ME 440 (Convective Heat and Mass Transfer).

I developed AE 450 (Computational Methods for Aerospace Engineering) for the

department of Aerospace Engineering.

I participated in the development of the online course ME 315 Heat Transfer.

I participated in the Self-Assessment of Mechanical Engineering Science and Applied

Mechanical Engineering Programs and the Curriculum development for the Aerospace
Engineering Department.

I have been involved in the development of several labs at KFUPM including; Laser Lab, Heat
Transfer Lab, ME Computer Aided Design Lab, Materials Lab, Aerodynamics Lab, Energy
research Lab, the Wind Tunnel Lab, and Turbomachinery Center.

I have also coordinated and participated in a number of short courses for the industry offered
by Mechanical Engineering Department.

My philosophy in teaching is to be friendly with the students and introduce them the real life
problems during the class by providing them examples of actual phenomena taking place
during our day-to-day life. In order to provide them a clear understanding of the course
material, I encourage them to use the modern technological tools, such as computational
facilities with various software, and the internet. In senior level and graduate level courses, I
assign the students open-ended problems and projects to improve their imagination and
productivity. For the senior design projects, I try to motivate the students to improve their
experimental work by using the theoretical and computational background they are provided
with.
