1) Rain water :- Rain water is the basic source of water . It is
pure like distilled water to start with .It is colourless , clear ,
sparking and pleasant in taste ;it is soft and contains very
impurities and it is free from pathogenic bacteria

2. Surface water :- Rain , as it reaches on the earth surface,


known as surface water .A brief description is given as under :

i) Rivers :- Rivers form a dependable source of water


supply for cities located on their banks eg . cities like
Allahabad, Banaras, Delhi etc but the river water is
never safe to drink directly as it is usually polluted
with industrial waste, agricultural waste , sewage
etc .
ii) Ponds /tanks :- Ponds / tanks are the sources of water
supply in many of the villages in India. Ponds are
bult up by digging up earth to collect water in them
but these are not safe for drinking as people in the
surrounding areas take bath , wash cloths , bath their
animals etc.
iii) Artificial lakes :- Artificial lakes are built up – land
areas using stones and bricks to collect rain water.
These are also known as dams or impounding
reservoirs . The water can be used for irrigation,
domestic and drinking purposes. The water from this
sources must be purified before supplied to
community for drinking and domestic use.

3.Under Surface water (Ground water):- The ground water


is available in the form of:-
i) Wells :- A well is pit or deep hole dug up or bored in the
ground to obtain water . wells can be shallow or deep .
 Shallow well :- A Shallow well derives its water from
above the impervious layer i.e subsoil water .
 Deep wells :- A deep well drives its water from
below the impervious layer and above the second or
third rocky layer.
 Sanitary well :- A sanitary well which is located at a
suitable place , constructed properly and protected
from getting contaminated
ii) Artesian wells:- An artesian well is kind of a deep well.

iii)Springs :- Springs are a form of ground water . Spring can


be shallow or deep on same criteria as that of shallow well and
deep well
.
