Electrical Design Report

1. GENERAL:
This report elaborates the General description of the electrical services for ADANE ASIFAW
FACTORY BUILDING to be constructed in ADDIS ABABA.

The main considerations made while preparing this electrical design are the need to consider
almost all requirements of such premises at an international as well as local standard EBCS 10
BS and IEC wiring regulations. And hence all electrical/electronic facilities are made part of the
final design.

The design consists of lighting system, power and socket outlets systems, telephone Systems, and
Data systems. All systems are designed to provide safe and reliable, full facility electrical
systems to various parts of the building that the people might require, with due attention also
given to even distribution of these systems to sub sections of the building.

Following are details of each design components by taking in to consideration of the local and
international electrical standards, while every design is to be supplemented with specific
technical specifications, estimated bills of quantities as well as engineering estimate of the
materials and labor for execution of this project. It is the designers’ belief that what has been
estimated as cost for this project is purely engineering estimate and hence actual market survey
shall be made to provide budgets and running of the project.

2. POWER DISTRIBUTION BOARDS AND PANELS

After considering all the electrical connected loads, the power demand for the project is
75.77KW considering a diversity factor of 1.0 and a transformer of 160KVA will supply these
loads. There is a diesel-generating set of 100KVA to supply standby power for the demanded
load to the buildings in case of utility power failure.
A Kilowatt-hour meter board also designed to measure the incoming power. The low voltage
power distribution system throughout the buildings shall be via PVC sheathed PVC insulated
power cables of 0.6/1KV insulation strength.
Cable runs from the main distribution board up-to the various sub- distribution boards shall be
inside rigid PVC conduits of appropriate size wherever appropriate. All panels

will have sheet steel front doors and IP43 minimum protection with doors closed and IP40 with
doors open.
All final circuits are fed through PVC insulated conductors inside PVC conduits. Twin socket outlets
of 10/16A with grounding contact are provided in all office areas screw fixed to 60mm
diameter recess boxes

MDB ‘s Main distribution boards have to be IP 40/IP 55 minimum for floor standing, panel
made of sheet steel enclosure or equivalent.
All other sub distribution boards are indoor type, IP 23, and wall mounted,
Flush/surface mounted as required. All distribution panels should have separate
Earthling bar for ground contact and each incoming and outgoing circuits shall be
properly labeled.
All sub boards for shops will coupled with a digital sub-meter in order to make the
billing easier.
Power cables to different Distribution boards are provided with due consideration to ampacity and
voltage drop.

The following formulae are used for calculating 1-phase and 3-phase current respectively:
Single phase current (I) in amperes for a given apparent power S in KVA:

I1-ph = Sx103
V
Where V = Phase voltage in volts
Three phase current (I) in amperes for a given apparent power S in KVA:

I3-ph = Sx103
3xV
Where V = Line voltage in volts
Power cables are selected in such a way so as not to exceed a voltage drop of 4 %.
Voltage drop in percent V % for a given active power P in KW:

V % = L x P x 103 x 100
xAxVV

3

Where L = wiring distance in m

P = active power in KW
A = cross-sectional area in mm2
V = line voltage in volts
 = conductivity in mm2/xm ,cu =56

3. INTERIOR LIGHTING

Lighting installation are done in the premises with PVC insulated conductor of 2.5sqmm in rigid
thermoplastic conduit (that confirm to DIN 49017) of not less than 16mm diameter under
plastered wall or slab and/or ceiling. Plastic type Flush mounted junction boxes are used where
necessary. Every circuit shall have its own neutral wire and the live wire shall be connected to
the switch. Switches for flush and surface mounting in lighting circuit shall be rated for 10A,
240V AC and shall conform to BS 3676.
The interior lighting is designed to provide adequate illumination levels (average maintained
lux) to be achieved for different areas.
Dialux Lighting Software (DLux 5.7a) Is Utilized To Calculate Illumination Level Of Each Room. A separate sheet
will be attached with this report for the lighting level result of the software used.

Lighting for the factory building finished good storage area is designed by industrial hay bays with mercury
vapor lamp (1100 JME-400W) which will be suspended from the roof structure (type :Disano 1100 LUCENTE
with diffuser ,suspension rope and 1100 JME-250w lamp and compensated control gear).

Note: the output of the DLux 5.7a is attached at the end of this report

Type of Area Illumination (lux)

A. WARE HOUSE 150-200
B. FACTORY 500-1000
C. OFFICE 400-500
D. Bed rooms 200
E. Kitchen 500
F. OFFICE 400-500
G. Corridor 100-200

Light fittings of the low energy consumption type are used wherever possible. Lighting control
generally will be by flush mounted switches.

3.1 NUMBER OF LIGHT FITTINGS

To calculate the number of lamps from the requested average lighting level the formula below is
used.
No.of Lamps = (Eavgx Area)/(UF x DF x ɸ )
Eavg= Average lighting level
Area = Area of room (m2), U F = Utilization factor
MF = maintenance factor, ɸ = Luminous flux per lamp (lumen)

3.2 LUMINARIES AND LAMPS

Enclosure to luminaries shall provide a minimum degree of protection of IP 20 when located

within the residence and can go up to IP66 when located in toilets stores and for external
purpose. Terminal blocks for connection of the supply cables shall be adequate for the size of
conductors forming the loop-in wiring.

4. SOCKET AND POWER OUTLET INSTALLATION

General purpose socket out lets shall be done with PVC insulated conductor of 2.5sqmm and
the load calculation per socket is assumed to be 200VA.The sockets are grouped in such a way
as not to exceed 1.2KVA per circuit. Stove sockets shall be done with 3x4 Sq.mm and each
socket shall have its own independent circuit with a load of 3KVA. All wires and cables shall run
in rigid thermoplastic conduit of appropriate size (that confirm to DIN 49017) of not less than
16mm diameter under plastered wall or slab and/or ceiling.
Socket outlets for flush and surface mounting shall be of the 3-pin type (with earthing contact)
rated for 16A, 240V AC and shall confirm to BS 1363.

5. TELEPHONE AND TVSYSTEM

Conduit under screed is utilized throughout the installation for Data Telephone and TV system.
PVC conduits shall confirm to DIN 49017 and shall not be less than 29mm diameter under
plastered wall or slab and/or ceiling and Data /telephone system for offices are terminated in
data cable patch panels inside 19” rack and telephone for bed rooms and shops are terminated
in boxes with plates at places where required necessary. Telephone points are provided from
these terminal boxes to different locations where necessary as deemed indicated on the
drawing.
The supply of the necessary equipment and wiring system for telephone shall be done by
Ethiopian Telecommunication Corporation (ETC).

6. LOW VOLTAGE SYSTEM EARTHING

The main distribution board (CMDB) shall be grounded with bare copper conductor of
appropriate cross-section and shall be connected to the earthing system. Earthing shall be done
with properly buried copper clad steel earth electrode of diameter 16mm length 150cm with
clamps, coupling and all necessary accessories.
All other sub distribution boards get their earth connection through the fifth wire (the earthing
wire) of the feeder cable.
