Dear Miss Mak,

I’m concerned about my little brother, Alex Wong, who is in your class,
his English is quite weak and he doesn’t seem to be very interesting in
taking part in English class at all. I have just being read about a new
method of teaching English has proven so successful that the
Education Department has been urged to give it a trial between primary
schools. I hope you won’t mind if I share what I had read with you.

Between November and March, Dr Poon, an assistance professor from

the Baptist University, studied the impact of new method on a Primary
Four class at the Pok Oi Hospital School. She was found. She found significant
improvement in the students’ listening skills and willing to learn. The
progress made was great when compared with those of a control group.

Apparently, the method has been widely adopted in overseas. It

involves listening to stories and familiarising students with vocabularies
and context of the stories beforehand. Students also take part in activities
such as group discussion and presentation after listening the story. Dr
Poon joins speaking with listen skills by having students to talk about
the story after listening and come up different endings for the story.

I wish that I had had this kind of lesson when I was in primary school.
Sometimes, listening and speaking skills are neglectful in English
teaching at the primary level and the common method which used in
schools can be mechanical and bored. I hope that you will consider
using this method when planning your English class for coming term.

Yours sincerely,
Chris Wong
