Kullat e Gjomarkajve (Sarajet)
G jomarkaj’s Kullas (also known as Saraje - the residence of this family including
some kullas that were built both for living in and protection. It is a type of
half-castle, half-palace building) are in the Grykë-Orosh village. They used to be
a complex of fortified buildings organized on a considerable space of land with
strategic value, a hill. The residence was built by Kapidan Llesh Gjomarkaj by the
end of the 18th century (Kapidan – a title that means brave and refers to a local
leader), over the ruins of earlier kullas that were destroyed in a fire. According to
historical documents, a part of these Saraje was burned by the Ottomans during
the Prizren League, and in 1921 they were once again burned during a conflict
between the regional government and the Mirdita Kapidan.
The Saraje were rebuilt by the family Gjon Marka Gjoni, but were burned again by
the partisan brigade on October, 1944. Their ruins can be found in the place today.
