Research on term “Bandwagon Effect” and herd mentality.

- The bandwagon effect is a psychological phenomenon in which people
act predominantly in accordance with the opinions of others, despite
their own convictions, which they may choose to ignore or disregard.
Herd mentality is another term for people's propensity to conform
their thoughts and actions to those of the collective. The tendency for
people to embrace particular actions, styles, or attitudes just because
others are doing so is known as the bandwagon effect. More
specifically, it is a cognitive bias that causes public opinion or behavior
to change as a result of the public supporting certain behaviors and
ideas. While herd mentality refer to the way that people might be
persuaded by their peers to engage in specific actions primarily on the
basis of emotion rather than reason. People who are influenced by
mob mentality may decide differently than they would have alone.
Recall an experience with Bandwagon Effect or herd mentality. This could be an
experience where you changed your own beliefs in order to match popular belief
just because it was popular and not necessarily because it was in line with your
own opinion.
- When I was in high school, I wanted to be slim because every man's
ideal type is slim nowadays, so I wanted to try a diet so that my crush
would like me back. I wanted to just like other girls who are slim back
then, but now I love myself just the way I am, and I won't change
myself just for a man.
