ECHAVIA ETHICS MODULE LESSON 2

ACTIVITY
IN ONE SOCIAL EXPERIMENT, RESEARCHERS HAD AN OLD MAN
WALK SLOWLY ON A VERY BUSY CITY STREET TO SEE HOW PEOPLE
WOULD BEHAVE AROUND HIM. THE RESEARCHERS OBSERVED
SOME PEOPLE WOULD WALK AROUND HIM IN THEIR HURRY TO GET
TO WHERE THEY NEEDED TO GO. SEVERAL INDIVIDUALS ON THE
OTHER HAND SLOWED THEIR PACE TO WALK WITH HIM AND ASK
HIM IF HE REQUIRED ASSISTANCE, WHICH HE POLITELY DECLINED.
AFTER WALKING A FEW MORE FEET, THE OLD MAN STARTED TO
BUCKLE AND FALL ON THE STREET LOOKING PALE AND DAZED
FROM EXERTION. PEOPLE IMMEDIATELY RUSHED TO HIS AID TO
HELP HIM AND TO CALL PARAMEDICS. WHEN ASKED WHY THEY DID
IT, PEOPLE HAD DIFFERENT RESPONSES FROM “BECAUSE HE WAS A
WEAK OLD GUY” TO “I JUST HAD TO HELP HIM, HE NEEDED MY
HELP.” WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU WERE IN THIS SITUATION
AND WHY?
- Even if I have other things to do, I will still assist him. I feel more
respect for myself and the gratification that comes from helping others
when I do nice deeds for them. I feel good once I help someone. I
believe I've done something significant, and it's clear that others
agree. Despite first doubting it, I might have enjoyed myself while
doing it. Since I ultimately got so much, what I did might not even feel
like a sacrifice. And I am confident that helping others is crucial since
doing so improves our own life. By helping others, we lift the spirits of
those around us. Love is contagious, and it spreads. It makes the
biggest contribution, especially if there are no rewards or expectations.
Giving back to others improves society as a whole and benefits present
and future generations.
ANALYSIS
 PEOPLE IN THE SOCIAL EXPERIMENT ACTED AUTOMATICALLY,
WITHOUT BEING TOLD WHAT TO DO. WHY DO YOU THINK
THEY ACTED THIS WAY?
- If we critically examine why individuals behave in the manner they do
in the sort of experiment, we will discover that the primary reason for
this is because people tend to follow the customary standards or norms
of society. Because everyone believes that following these standards is
what morality requires of them, everyone is compliant with them.
Additionally, people desire to coordinate their actions with those of
others working in related fields. Furthermore, since it is the sort of
culture they have grown up with, their beliefs and practices might be
intricately related to what they do daily as well.

 WHAT ARE YOUR MOTIVATIONS FOR YOUR ACTIONS?

DISCUSS.
- I usually don't look to receive anything in return when I help people,
and I'm not sure whether I believe in karma, so I don't initially think
this is what motivates me. A part of me believes that the idea that I
might make someone just a tiny bit happier motivates me. Maybe I can
identify with the anxiety and tension that frequently accompanies folks
who are in need, and all I want to do is assist them get rid of those
feelings. Helping one another enhances our humanity. Self-
gratification, comfort, joy, and happiness are some of the inner
emotions that inspire individuals to help one another. Helping one
another makes us more human. People are motivated to help one
another when they feel content, comfortable, happy, or joyful within.
Knowing that I have aided others improves my mood.

Using the characteristics of moral standards, look for an article or news

that deals with a particular contemporary ethical issue. Attach/ paste your
chosenarticle or news at the back of this paper. Discuss why the issue is an
ethical one. What moral standards and non-moral standards does it call upon
or challenge? Write your discussion in the space below.
- For this issue I will choose this as a Moral Standard Because as I was
reading the article, I noticed that the way they explain it is just like a
moral standard, just like the specific characteristics of a certain moral
standard like reasonability, impartiality, prescriptivity, overridingness,
autonomy from arbitrary authority, publicity, practicability, and
universality. It all contains my article that I shared or a screenshot.
Millions of women worldwide continue to face discrimination because
of the following: laws and policies that prevent them from having
equal access to land, property, and housing; economic and social
discrimination that limits their options in life and makes them more
susceptible to trafficking; gender-based violence that affects at least
30% of women worldwide; denial of their right to sexual and
reproductive health; and social rejection of women human rights
defenders. And I can tell you that this is a moral standard because it
deals with matters, we think that can seriously injure or benefit
women. It also has to do with the standards individuals hold for the
sorts of deeds they consider to be morally correct and wrong, as well
as the importance they accord to the categories of things they consider
to be morally good and terrible. It implies that everyone should uphold
moral principles. To be more precise, however, it requires that moral
principles be applicable to everyone who is in a circumstance that is
relevantly comparable.
