TOPIC 5: SETTING THE ENVOROMENT FOR MUSICAL LEARNING

8.1 Introduction

Music
room management covers hygiene, table and chair arrangements, management and use of source materials, storage of musical
instruments and safety issues. A conducive music room will produce a comfortable teaching and learning environment. From the
physical aspects, the music teacher must determine that the music room is clean and furniture is arranged in order and is
suitable for activities to be carried out .The exhibition corner such as song scores, charts and diagrams of instruments
organology should be displayed attractively. The management of the music room is the responsibility of the senior teacher or
panel music teacher. Facilities and equipment available in the music room should always be well managed.

8.2 MUSIC MANAGEMENT

To create a good learning environment for teaching and learning music education,music teachers should give adequate
attention to the following features:

(a) Positive attitude and morale of teachers on education;


(b) Create high motivation among students;
(c) Cordial teacher-student relationship;
(d) Sensitive to studentsÊ needs;
(e) Atmosphere of music rooms should be comfortable all the time; and
(f) Controlled discipline.

8.3 Selection and Use of Resource Materials

A few matters need to be considered before certain source materials are selected
for use:

(a) Related to the lesson content;


(b) Appropriate to the types of the planned activities;
(c) Suitable with the size of the group being taught;
(d) Appropriate with studentsÊ level;
(e) Involving related senses such as the sense of hearing, for example, whether the sound produced by that material is
strong or otherwise; and
(f) Compatible with studentsÊ background.

8.4 Materials’ Storage

The following points are a few suggestions that can be applied by music teachers and students in order to ensure that music
materials in a music room are stored well.

(a) All materials, books, pamphlets and borrowed instruments should be placed back into its original place neatly;
(b) All students must ensure that the music rooms are neat and tidy when leaving the schoolsÊ music source room as shown in
in places that have been prepared in accordance with the music sources division organisation; and
(c) Resource materials should be stored in dry cupboards. Humid storage
conditions will damage the resource materials.

Preparation of Inventory

It is adviseable for music teachers to prepare an inventory for a music room in the school. This will ensure that the music room is
always in good condition for teaching and learning. Below are a few tips on how to prepare an inventory of a music room.

 The music teacher should prepare inventories related to resources material available in the music room;

 Inventory is important to detect the loss and damage of source materials. Material resources are very important for
teaching and learning purposes. If the materials are found to be damaged, the next action would be to repair them;

 Revision of stock can be made by providing checklists for each of the source materials available in the custody of the
music teacher or music administrator. This will take care of matters related to stock checking; and

Materials’ Storage

The points below are a few tips that can be applied by music teachers and students in order to ensure that music materials in a
music room are stored well.

(a) Borrowed instruments must be put back to its original place properly;

(b) Arrange the returned books on the shelves;

(c) All students must make sure that the music resource rooms are neat and tidy when they are leaving the rooms; and

(d) The music teacher in charge must ensure that all sources of music are stored at a prepared place according to the
division of music sources
