A. Safety Precautions
(1) The properties of operation of a jet engine powered aircraft make it necessary to prevent:
(a) Injury to the persons who are near the engine.
(b) Damage to the engine or aircraft.
(c) Damage to other aircraft, equipment or buildings.
(2) Engine safety precautions for the persons who operate the engine.
(a) Two engines in operation
WARNING: IF TWO ENGINES ARE IN OPERATION AT THE SAME TIME, MAKE SURE THAT NO MAINTENANCE PERSONNEL STAY IN
THE AREA BETWEEN THE TWO ENGINES.
1 Make sure that no maintenance personnel are in the area between the two engines when they are in operation.
(b) Air intake danger areas
(Ref. Fig. Air Intake Suction Danger Area)
WARNING: STAY AWAY FROM THE DANGER AREAS AT THE FRONT AND THE SIDES OF THE ENGINE DURING OPERATION. THE
SUCTION IS SUFFICIENT AT THE AIR INTAKE COWL TO PULL A PERSON INTO (IN PART OR FULLY) THE ENGINE. THIS
CAN KILL A PERSON OR CAUSE A BAD INJURY.
CAUTION: REMOVE OR MAKE SAFE ALL LOOSE ITEMS BEFORE YOU DO WORK AROUND AN ENGINE THAT OPERATES. THE SUC-
TION IS SUFFICIENT AT THE AIR INTAKE COWL TO PULL HATS, LOOSE CLOTHING, GLASSES, AND WORK RAGS FROM
YOUR POCKETS INTO THE ENGINE.
1 The air intake danger areas are shown in the figure given below
(c) The air intake. The air intake is in the front of the engine. There is a strong air suction when the air goes into the engine. The suction is very strong when
the engine operates at take-off power.
(d) Thrust Reverser
WARNING: WHEN THE REVERSER OPERATES, STAY AWAY FROM THE DANGER AREAS AT THE FRONT AND THE SIDES OF THE
ENGINE. THE FAN DISCHARGE AIR COMES OUT THE SIDES OF THE ENGINE AND MOVES TO THE FRONT. THE VELOCITY
OF THE FAN DISCHARGE AIR IS SUFFICIENT TO CAUSE YOU TO FALL, OR TO CAUSE YOU A BAD INJURY, OR KILL YOU.
WARNING: WHEN THE REVERSER OPERATES, MAKE SURE THAT ALL PERSONS WHO DO WORK NEAR THE AIRCRAFT USE EYE
PROTECTION. THE FAN DISCHARGE AIR CAN COLLECT AND BLOW LOOSE DIRT, STONES, SAND OR OTHER UN-
WANTED MATERIAL A LONG DISTANCE.
1 The thrust reverver. The thrust reverser is usually used after the aircraft lands. It is possible (not recommended) to operate the thrust reverser at idle
power when the aircraft is parked. When the thrust reverser operates, the fan discharge air blows out the sides of the engine towards the front of the
aircraft.
NOTE: Reverser thrust engine operation is not recommended when the aircraft is parked (stopped). The reverser thrust air can go into the engine
again with unwanted objects (from the ground) and cause gas path damage and a stall.
WARNING: STAY AWAY FROM THE ENGINE EXHAUST AREA WHEN THE ENGINE STARTS OR OPERATES. THE JET EXHAUST IS HOT
AND OF SUFFICIENT VELOCITY TO CAUSE YOU TO FALL, OR TO CAUSE YOU A BAD INJURY, OR KILL YOU.
WARNING: WHEN THE ENGINE OPERATES, MAKE SURE THAT ALL PERSONS WHO DO WORK NEAR THE AIRCRAFT USE EYE PRO-
TECTION. AT HIGH ENGINE SPEEDS, THE EXHAUST CAN COLLECT AND BLOW LOOSE DIRT, STONES, SAND, AND OTH-
ER UNWANTED MATERIAL A LONG DISTANCE.
WARNING: STAY AWAY FROM THE EXHAUST AREA WHEN THE ENGINE STARTS OR OPERATES. DO NOT BREATHE THE EXHAUST
GAS OR LET THE EXHAUST GAS GET IN YOUR EYES. THE EXHAUST GAS CAN CAUSE INJURY TO YOUR LUNGS AND
EYES IN AREAS OF HIGH CONCENTRATION.
WARNING: STAY AWAY FROM THE EXHAUST AREA WHEN THE ENGINE STARTS. AT SOME TIME DURING THE ENGINE START PRO-
CEDURE, FUEL THAT DID NOT BURN IN THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER CAN BURN IN THE EXHAUST AREA. THIS CAN
CAUSE LONG FLAMES TO BLOW OUT OF THE EXHAUST NOZZLE WHICH CAN BURN YOU.
1 The engine exhaust and fan discharge behind the engine is called the jet wake. Do not go behind the engine during engine operation. This area is
very dangerous to persons because of the high temperature and high air velocity.
2 The jet wake danger area for Ground Idle power is shown in the figure given below
(Ref. Fig. Jet Wake Ground Idle Danger Area Diagram SHEET 1)
3 The jet wake danger area for Takeoff power is shown in the figure given below
(Ref. Fig. Jet Wake Ground Takeoff Power Danger Area Diagram SHEET 1)
4 Before the engine starts, you must remove all loose and flammable material from the engine exhaust and fan discharge area.
(f) Engine noise.
WARNING: WHEN THE ENGINE OPERATES, MAKE SURE THAT ALL PERSONS WHO DO WORK NEAR THE AIRCRAFT USE EAR PRO-
TECTION. THE LOUD NOISE FROM THE ENGINE CAN CAUSE TEMPORARY OR PERMANENT DAMAGE TO YOUR EARS IF
YOU DO NOT USE EAR PROTECTION.
1 The loud noise from a jet engine can cause temporary or permanent damage to a person's ears. This damage can happen after a very short time is
the ears are not protected. This damage can cause your hearing and sense of balance to decrease.
2 The distance you are from the engine is very important for noise damage to your ear. The nearer you are to the engine, the more the danger from
the noise.
3 Engine noise levels and distances for Minimum Idle are given in the tables and the figure given below
(Ref. Fig. Jet Engine Noise Danger Area SHEET 1)
4 Engine noise levels and distances for Takeoff Power are given in the tables and the figure given below

(g) The engine ignition system high voltage.
WARNING: WHILE THE ENGINE IGNITION OPERATES, DO NOT TOUCH THE IGNITION SYSTEM. THE IGNITION SYSTEM USES HIGH
ENERGY WHICH IS DANGEROUS. THE IGNITION SYSTEM ENERGY IS SUFFICIENT TO CAUSE AN ELECTRIC SHOCK
WHICH CAN KILL YOU.
1 The engine ignition system generates high energy and high voltage electricity. An electrical shock from this system can kill a person.
2 The ignition system usually operates when the engine starts but the ignition system can also operate when the engine is not operated.
(h) Hot engine parts.
1 After engine shutdown, do not work or make an inspection on the hot section or the exhaust areas for 30 minutes minimum. A longer time is
recommended.
2 It is recommended that you wait 3 to 5 hours after engine shutdown before you do a borescope inspection of the HPC, combustion chamber, HPT or
LPT.
3 As an option, you can air motor the engine with the starter to decrease the engine temperature.
4 The temperature inside the engine must be less than 150 deg.F (65.56 deg.C) before you install a borescope inside the engine.
WARNING: IF POSSIBLE, KEEP FUEL AND OIL AWAY FROM YOUR SKIN. USE PROTECTIVE CLOTHES. FUEL AND OIL CAN DRY
YOUR SKIN AND CAUSE SKIN IRRITATION.
1 Engine fuel and oil can make your skin dry if it touches your skin for a long time. If the fuel or oil touches your skin, remove the fuel or oil from your
skin as soon as possible.
(j) Pressurized oil system
WARNING: DO NOT REMOVE THE OIL TANK CAP UNTIL 5 MINUTES MINIMUM AFTER THE ENGINE SHUTDOWN. THIS WILL LET THE
OIL PRESSURE BLEED OFF. IF YOU DO NOT, YOU CAN CAUSE HOT OIL BURNS TO YOUR EYES AND SKIN.
1 The oil tank is pressurized during operation. The pressure slowly decreases after shutdown. Do not remove the oil tank cap for a minimum of 15
minutes after engine shutdown.
(k) Fan cowls and thrust reverser doors.
WARNING: DO NOT OPEN THE FAN COWL DOORS OR THRUST REVERSER DOORS WHEN THE WIND VELOCITY IS MORE THAN 45
KNOTS. IF YOU DO OPEN THE DOORS, THEY CAN QUICKLY CLOSE BEFORE YOU CAN ATTACH THE HOLD OPEN RODS.
THIS CAN CAUSE A BAD INJURY OR KILL A PERSON.
1 You must only open the fan cowl doors and thrust reverser doors for maintenance when the wind velocity is less than 45 Knots.
2 After the fan cowl doors are opened, they can stay open for wind velocity up to 60 Knots.
(3) Precautions and procedures for safe and correct engine operation
(a) Precautions for the air intake.
CAUTION: BEFORE YOU START THE ENGINE, MAKE SURE THAT THERE ARE NO LOOSE OBJECTS IN THE AIR INTAKE COWL AND
IN THE AREA NEAR THE AIR INTAKE. THE SUCTION IS SUFFICIENT AT THE AIR INTAKE COWL TO PULL LOOSE OB-
JECTS INTO THE ENGINE AND CAUSE MUCH ENGINE DAMAGE.
1 Clean the area in front of the air intake before the engine is operated. All loose objects must be removed.
CAUTION: MAKE SURE THAT THE AIRCRAFT IS PARKED ON A CLEAN, DRY AND FLAT SURFACE. THERE MUST BE NO OIL,
GREASE OR SIMILAR MATERIALS ON THE SURFACE.
THE PAVEMENT MUST NOT BE BROKEN OR LOOSE, AND WE RECOMMEND CONCRETE MATERIAL BECAUSE ASPHALT
CAN MELT AND CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT.
1 Make sure that the aircraft is parked on a clean, dry and flat surface. There must be no oil, grease or similar materials on the surface. The pavement
must not be broken or loose, and we recommend concrete material because asphalt can melt and cause damage to the aircraft.
(c) Precautions for deicing fluid.
WARNING: DO NOT APPLY DEICING FLUID WITH A SPRAY GUN INTO THE ENGINE WHILE THE ENGINE IS IN OPERATION. THE DEI-
CING FLUID WILL CAUSE CONTAMINATION OF THE AIRFOILS AND DETERIORATION OF PERFORMANCE WILL BE THE
RESULT.
1 Deicing fluid is sprayed on engine nacelles to remove and prevent ice. Do not spray deicing fluid into the engine gas path.
(d) Precautions for X-rays.
CAUTION: DO NOT X-RAY THE ENGINE WITH THE ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROL (EEC) INSTALLED. BEFORE YOU USE X-RAYS,
YOU MUST REMOVE THE EEC. X-RAYS CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE EEC.
1 It is possible to use X-rays for a diagnostic inspection of the important parts inside the engine. The X-rays can damage the Electronic Engine Control
(EEC). Remove the EEC before you do any X-ray inspections.
(e) Precautions for the thrust lever movement.
CAUTION: YOU MUST OBEY ALL OF THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR THRUST LEVER MOVEMENT THAT FOLLOW. IF YOU DO NOT OBEY
THEM, A DETERIORATION OF THE PERFORMANCE CAN OCCUR.
1 When possible, all thrust lever movements must be slow and smooth.
2 Snap accelerations and decelerations will not cause a deterioration of the engine performance if you obey the instructions which follows.
a Before a snap acceleration, operate the engine at MINIMUM IDLE for at least five minutes after the first engine start.
b After a deceleration from a power setting above 73.4 percent N1 (4700 RPM N1), operate the engine at 29.7 percent N1 (1900 RPM N1) for at
least 20 minutes before an engine shutdown.
c After a deceleration from a power setting above 54.6 percent N1 (3500 RPM N1), operate the engine at a fixed power setting between
MINIMUM IDLE and 54.6 percent N1 (3500 RPM N1) for a minimum of 10 minutes before a snap acceleration above 64.0 percent N1 (4100
RPM N1).
NOTE: It is possible to ignore the above recommendations for stabilization times if you do a slow acceleration (120 seconds or longer) instead
of a snap acceleration.
CAUTION: DO NOT USE DRY CHEMICAL FIRE EXTINGUISHING AGENTS UNLESS THERE IS AN EMERGENCY. DRY CHEMICAL FIRE
EXTINGUISHING AGENTS CAN CAUSE CORROSION OF THE ENGINE GASPATH PARTS.
1 Dry chemical fire extinguishing agents are not recommended for use in the gaspath of a jet aircraft engine but can be used in an emergency.
2 If dry chemical fire extinguishing agents are used, if possible, do the steps that follow:
a If both rotors are free to turn and the EGT is less than 500 deg.C (932.00 deg.F), dry motor the engine to blow the extinguishing agents from the
engine.
b Do the requirements specified for the reuse of damaged engines. Refer to Guidelines For Reuse of Damaged Engines and Engine Parts
(Ref. AMM TASK 70-56-00-910-801) .
c Clean the engine gaspath by the requirements specified in the Standard Practices. Refer to Cleaning Requirements After Chemical Contact
With Fire Extinguishing Agent, Hydraulic Fluid, Oil or Fuel (SPOP 425) (Ref. AMM TASK 70-55-00-910-801) .
CAUTION: DO NOT USE WATER TO REMOVE DRY CHEMICAL FIRE-EXTINGUISHING AGENTS FROM THE ENGINE. WATER WILL
CAUSE THE DRY FIRE-EXTINGUISHING AGENTS TO BOND TO THE AIRFOILS AND CAUSE INCREASED CORROSION OF
ENGINE PARTS.
3 Water is not recommended to remove dry chemical fire extinguishing agents. These agents are not water-soluble. Water can cause the agents to
build -up and bond to the parts. This can cause decreased engine performance, corrosion and more damage if the engine is not cleaned correctly.
(i) Aircraft thrust balance during engine operation.
(Ref. Fig. Engine Operation - Aircraft Thrust Balance SHEET 1)
1 Single engine operation is permitted up to N1 = 60%
2 If higher power is necessary, the thrust of the second engine (non tested engine or opposite engine) must be equal to:
· Ground Idle, if the tested engine operates up to N1 = 70%,
· N1 = 50%, if the tested engine operates up to N1 = 80%,
· N1 = 60%, if the tested engine operates higher than N1 = 80%.
(j) Prevent aircraft movement during engine operation.
1 Aircraft must be immobilized by wheel chocks and parking brake.
NOTE: If engine start is followed by a high power run, use CHOCK-MLG,ENGINE RUN-UP (98F10103500000) .
2 When the tested engine operates at MAX CLIMB or higher (not tested engine at N1 = 60%), a minimum of 3500 kg (7716.18 lb) must be in the
center tank.
NOTE: This minimum fuel quantity does not include the fuel consumption of the engines necessary to do the test. This minimum quantity must stay
in the center tank at the end of the test.
3 There must be two qualified persons in the cockpit when performing an engine run above idle. One must monitor the outside and the aircraft
behaviour while the other performs the engine test.
4 If the aircraft begins to move while performing an engine run, immediately set all the thrust levers to idle position.

(b) The temporary interruption of main oil pressure caused by negative "G" forces is limited to 30 seconds maximum. Normal oil pressure will continue after
the effects of negative "G" forces are gone.
(c) The maximum pressure drop across the main oil filter is 36 psid (248.2 kPa). When the pressure drop across the main oil filter is 36 psid (248.2 kPa) a
cockpit warning light comes on.
NOTE: The pressure differential across the main oil filter is not shown in the cockpit, but there is a main oil filter pressure differential warning light.
CAUTION: DO NOT MIX DIFFERENT TYPES OF OIL IN THE ENGINE OIL SYSTEM.
(a) See PW Service Bulletin No. 238 for a list of approved engine oil brands, types and specifications.
(5) Fuel specifications
(a) See PW Service Bulletin No. 2016 for engine fuel specifications.
(6) Rotor operation speed limits (Redline speed limit)
(a) The maximum N1 is 6350 RPM (99.1 percent) indicated speed.

6 Incorrect fire warning indications caused by a high temperature air leak on the fire warning indicator.
7 Accessories and components have been replaced many times.
(9) Engine leakage limits (Ref. AMM D/O 71-71-00-00) .
(a) The maximum engine seal leakage limits during engine operation and after shutdown are shown in the table given below.
Engine Seal Leakage Limits
Table 205
NOTE (1): For permitted hydraulic fluid leakage limits at hydraulic pump drive seal drain, (Ref. AMM TASK 29-00-00-790-001) .
NOTE (2): A one time flyback limit of 360 cc/hour (120 drops/minute) to the nearest maintenance base capable of replacing the component is permitted.
NOTE (3): Oil leakage of 6 drops/minute or less is permitted and maintenance is not necessary. Oil leakage can be greater than 6 drops/minute a
gearbox seal drain. The engine can continue in service to the next layover at a maintenance station if you obey all these conditions that follow:
(a) Oil leakage with the engine operating cannot be more than
30 drops/minute cumulative of all gearbox pad oil seals.
(b) Current oil consumption (not average) is less than 0.3 qt/hr
(0.28 liter/hr).
(c) The oil tank is full.
(d) Only one engine has the leakage problem.
(e) A deferred item is entered in the log to replace the leaky
seal.
(f) During the deferred period, the leakage must be checked
prior to each flight and the oil consumption must be checked
after each flight. The leakage must stay within the above
limits.
Subtask 71-00-00-910-055-A
B. Engine Operation Guidelines
(1) Oil consumption guidelines
(a) Oil consumption is acceptable if the consumption is not more than 0.100 gallon/hour (0.38 liter/hour).
NOTE: Typical engine oil consumption is one quart (0.25 gallon) (0.95 liter) for 20-30 hours of engine operation.
(b) If the engine has a slow or sudden increase in oil consumption, do an examination for external oil leaks or damage to the engine bearing compartments.
NOTE: The oil quantity shown on the ECAM ENGINE page only shows the quantity of oil in the oil tank. It does not show the quantity of oil in the engine.
During engine operation, as much as 6 quarts (5.68 liters) of oil can go from the oil tank to the engine. This will cause the oil indicator to decrease
by the same quantity. After engine shutdown, the oil returns to the oil tank and the oil indicator shows an increase in oil quantity.
NOTE: Elevated levels of engine vibration can cause damage to the engine over long periods of time. Operators are recommended to trend monitor en-
gine vibration levels to identify important changes in engine vibration.
(b) The vibration guideline is set at 3.3 cockpit units for all rotors.
NOTE: This level of engine vibration can cause damage to the engine over moderate periods of time.
1 If the engine has this vibration level, do the corrective action steps Ref. TSM 77-32-00-810-817 and Ref. TSM 77-32-00-810-818 .
(c) The cockpit advisory level is set at 5.0 cockpit units for all rotors.
NOTE: This level of engine vibration can cause damage to the engine over short periods of time.
1 If the engine has this vibration level, do the corrective action steps shown in the Fault Isolation Procedures, Ref. TSM 77-32-00-810-817 or Ref.
TSM 77-32-00-810-818 .
