Help on Energy Balance Calculations

When drawing the pie charts to show the energy balance, each pie chart is made out of following
four segments:

1. Brake Power as a % of Rate of Energy input

2. Rate of Energy in Exhaust as a % of Rate of Energy input

3. Rate of Energy to cooling water as a % of Rate of Energy input

4. Rate of other Energy losses including friction losses as a % of Rate of Energy input

Items 2, 3, 4 are all energy losses. All four items should add up to 100%

Rate of other Energy losses including friction losses [kW] =

Rate of Energy input [kW] - Brake Power [kW] - Rate of Energy to cooling water [kW] - Rate of
Energy in Exhaust [kW]

Equations to calculate the Rate of Energy Input and Brake Power are given in engine-experiment-lab-
students.pdf document.

Following equations are also given in the engine-experiment-lab-students.pdf document. Shown

below are how to work out the T value for each equation.

Rate of Energy in Exhaust

Cpexhaust = Specific heat capacity of exhaust [1.15 kJ/kgK]

Exhaust mass flow rate = air mass flow rate + fuel mass flow rate [kg/s]

Exhaust below manifold [T5] - Ambient temperature

Rate of Energy to cooling water

Cpwater = Specific heat capacity of water [4180 J/kgK]

= Mass flow rate of water

= Heat exchanger outlet temperature [T3] – Heat exchanger inlet temperature [T4]

Based on the above you can create a pie chart showing the energy balance for each load.
This needs to be done for the two speeds 2000 rpm and 2500 rpm. In total there will be 10 pie
charts.
