ANSWERS QUESTIONS

FLAPPER  The part on the bottom of the toilet tank that opens to
VALVE allow water to flow from the tank into the bowl.
FLOAT BALL  It is connected to the ballcock inside the tank that rises or
falls with changing water levels in the tank, and actuates
or shuts off the ballcock as needed.
FLOOR  A fitting that connects a toilet to a floor drain.
FLANGE
FLUSHOMETER  Toilet valve that automatically shuts off after it meters a
certain amount of water flow.
FLUX  Paste applied to copper pipes and fitting before soldering
to help the fusion process and prevent oxidation.
FOOTPRINT  The area of floor space taken up by a water heater or
other appliance.
FRENCH  A covered ditch containing a layer of fitted or loose stone
DRAIN or other pervious material.
GAS COCK  Plug valve installed in the main gas line and appliances.
GATE VALVE  A device that controls the flow in a pipe.

toilets.

other materials to allow raw contaminated sewage to
leach in the ground.
WASHDOWN  The noisiest type of water closet flushing.
 Water enters through an open rim, as though a bucket of
water were dumped into the bowl, filling the front
trapway and creating siphon action. This model provides
quick removal of water with minimum water rise. Small
water surface makes the model more vulnerable to soil
and clogging. This is the least efficient and most noisy type
but lowest in cost.
