Art Appreciation

Activity: Art Talk

Art is a tool for people like me to express unsaid thoughts and emotions. This subject made me
appreciate artwork more. This made me look deeply into artworks, especially artworks that are abstract,
and analyze them. Aside from appreciating art, this subject also made me aware and educated about
different styles of art and what they convey. Some artists really put all their emotions into their
masterpieces. Just like Picasso said, “Painting is just another way of keeping a diary.”

2.Functions of Arts

Activity: Photo Appropriation

Art has its own functions. The functions of art can be physical, social, or political. From what I
experienced during this period, a lot of these functions of art can be seen. Physical art is used for us to
have a more convenient and easier life than before. Meanwhile, social, and political art is used to spread
awareness of and political injustice that we are facing. I am drawn to physical art as I am to paintings,
but social and political art made me look deeply into life. Have we downgraded and grown the opposite
way for this kind of art to be rampant today? These artworks will not be present if there are no bad
things that are happening to people.

3. Visual Arts

Activity: Elements of Visual Arts

Visual arts are one of the scopes in humanities, meaning that we perceive with our naked eyes. Andy
Warhol said, “Do not think about making art, just get it done. Let everyone else decide if it is good or
bad, whether they love it or hate it. While they are deciding, make even more art.” Visual arts are
classified into graphic and plastics art. Some people may not like some plastic art and may view it as
trash but we should not be swayed by their opinions. In the end,

4. Medium of Arts

Activity: Scribbling soul

The medium of art is something that you use to make that artwork. Some examples are paintbrushes,
crayons, paint, and canvas. My materials for making my artwork are limited so I make sure that I wisely
use all my art materials. This topic made me realize that artwork can be made with different mediums,
you just need to widen your imagination.

5. Elements of visual Arts

Activity: Male/ Female Human Portrait, Primary and secondary colors

The elements of visual arts are color, form, line, shape, space, texture, and value. Arts can be two-or
three-dimensional, descriptive, implied, or abstract. In creating a masterpiece, these elements should be
present. Making the human portrait made me realize that representational art is not for me. Maybe I
will do better in nonrepresentational art or dancing, which I think is the only thing I’m good at.
6 . Painting

Activity: Coffee Painting

Coffee painting is a painting using the main medium which is coffee. Doing this activity, I wasted a lot of
Oslo paper just because I cannot really decide what I want to draw. My final artwork is a portrait of a
faceless woman. I was satisfied with my artwork not until I saw different artworks from my classmates.
But I reassured myself that artwork is subjective and I should be proud and satisfied with my work.

7. Principles of Design

Activity: Origami, Okir Design, Art Talk

The seven principles of art and design are balance, rhythm, pattern, emphasis, contrast, unity, and
movement. Like the elements of visual arts, these principles should also be present in an artwork. As I
was making my origami, I thought that it would be easy because you will only fold the paper, but as I
was working with my origami, I can even barely follow the process neatly. But I was able to finish it. As
to my art talk, I find it hard to film because I chose to do vlogging but I am shy. But like my other works, I
was able to finish it.
