WORLD BAMBOO DAY
Introduction
Recently, nanofibrillated cellulose made from biomass has drawn interest because of its biodegradability, low density, superior
mechanical qualities, economic worth, and renewability. The global market for nanocellulose is projected to achieve USD 783 million
by 2025. However, there are few disadvantages and one it is limited raw material supplies. In this study, Semantan Bamboo
(Gigantochloa scorthechinii) was used as a raw material in the production of nanofibrillated cellulose. Bamboo famously known as
an alternative material for wood industries due to the comparable properties. It is abundant and rapidly grown in the tropical area,
making it a suitable raw materials for nanofibrillated cellulose production.
Methodology
Conclusion
This study found that Bamboo Semantan is a suitable raw material for producing nanofibrillated
cellulose using mechanical process. The nanofibrillated cellulose produced from Bamboo Semantan Acknowledgement
exhibit fiber diameter in nanoscale, high holocellulose content, and high yield, proving that Bamboo This research was funded by
Semantan a suitable raw material for producing nanofibrillated cellulose. However, more bamboo Forest Research Institute
species need to be studied for comparison and to find the most suitable alternative materials in Malaysia (FRIM) under RMK-
producing nanofibrillated cellulose. 12 grant.
