Exercise 9: Spatial Organization

Grid Spatial Organization, Amsterdam Orphanage, Aldo Van Eyck, 1950.

Overview:
The manner in which spaces are arranged can clarify their relative importance and functional or symbolic role in the
organization of a building. This exercise explores the organization of spaces based on their shape and volume.

Assignment: Openings in Space


Step 1. Using the space schedule below, design a space configuration that applies two or more spatial organizations. The
design shall contain at least 2 levels and only 2 different spaces shapes. Apply subtraction and addition
techniques to generate openings in both the vertical and horizontal planes (while preserving their original shape),
and to achieve the required degree of enclosure.

Step 2. Draw all plans and a cutaway isometric view for the design on a 50x35cm paper panels. Use hatching or
coloring techniques to apply shade and shadows on your drawings.
Step 3. Build a physical model for the form you have designed.
Step 4. Submit photographs of your mid work and final work on Moodle by the dates assigned by your instructor.
