DESCRIPTION ON COOLING SYSTEM OBJECTIVE: Understand the cooling system of diesel locomotive.

Learn the function of component of cooling system. INTRODUCTION: Arrangement has been made on the locomotive for cooling the following equipment and system: 1.The diesel engine 2. The Engine lubricating oil. 3.The charging air for the diesel Engine. A single cooling water circuit is provided to dissipitate heat from all the sources. While the diesel is directly cooled by water cooling of the engine lub oil, the charging air is effected by means of special heat exchangers. The cooling unit is installed in the superstructure cab short hood side of the locomotive. The water flows through a group of radiator element thereby dissipating its heat to the air which flows across these elements. The air flows is produces by a hydraulically driven from Motor. The BHER Fan starts operating when the cooling water temperature reaches 78 degree cent. And doesnt allow the water temperature to rise beyond 83 degree cent.. COOLING WATER CIRCUIT: A centrifugal pump mounted on the engine delivers the cooling water into three parts of the circuit connected in parallel. The main portion flows through the lub oil heat exchanger and then through the cooling water spaces of the diesel engine. The second part of the cooling water passes through the charging air cooler and then the third part through the Turbocharger. On the exit side

of the main cooling water circuit the other two exit also meets. The cooling water temperature is measured at a point joint after the point the three exit pipes have joined to form a common exit pipe. If the cooling water temperature goes beyond 95degree cent. The engine automatically switches to idling speed. A by pass connected to the header tank takes up the excess water due to thermal expansion. The venting pipes from the cooling units including the diesel engine connected to the header tank. The water level can be controlled by ascertaining the level through Gauge glass fitted on the header tank and is visible from side the cabin. The header tank and consequently the whole cooling system are separated from the ambient atmosphere by means of a spring loaded fitted in the filler Cap. This is also known as the Vacuum relief valve opens between a pressure of 0.4 & 0.5 Atm. The loss of cooling water due to evaporation is also avoided by the fitment of this relief valve. During the running of the engine certain over pressure builds up in the whole system which eliminates the formation of steam bubbles and thus pitting and the corrosion in the system. A shifting valve provided in the same filter cap presents building up of any pressure in the system while the engine is cooling down after it has been stopped.
