Experiment 2: Measurement of Basic and Derived Quantities

Introduction

Objectives

 The experiment is conducted to analyze the thickness, diameter, and weight of a 10-peso Gat
Bomifacio coin using data from measuring five 10 peso coins with a metric ruler.
 Analyze the properties of Distilled water, its mass, volume and density using the data taken from
measuring 5 trial measurements with a graduated cylinder and triple beam balance.
 Analyze the volume and density of Irregularly-shaped object.

Apparatus:

Meter stick, 10-peso Gat Bonifacio coins, triple beam balance, distilled water, distilled water bottle,
graduated cylinder,

Procedure:

A.Diameter, Thickness and Mass of PhP10 Gat Bonifacio coin.

1.Measure the diameter and thickness of PhP10 Gat Bonifacio coin in millimeter. Make Five (5) trial
measurements and compute the mean diameter and thickness.

2.Measure the mass of the coin in grams. Make five (5) trial measurements and compute the mean mass

3.Fill up the Table 1:

Table 1
Properties of PhP10 Gat Bonifacio Coin
Properties/Trial 1 2 3 4 5 Mean
Diameter, mm
Thickness, mm
Mass, g

4. Compute the% mean deviation and % error by using the mean diameter, thickness and mass of the
coin. Consult the published standard diameter, thickness and mass of PhP10 Gat Bonifacio coin for the
true value. Cite the source.

5. Describe and interpret the measurement results in terms of precision and accuracy

B. Density of Distilled Water.

1.Weigh a dry 10-milliliter graduated cylinder. Make five (5) trial measurements and record the mass in
grams.

2. Obtain a fair amount of distilled water and measure the temperature in degrees Centigrade Make five
(5) trial measurements and record the temperature of distilled water in degree Centigrade
3. Put 10 milliliter of distilled water in the graduated cylinder. Weigh the mass of the Graduated cylinder
containing distilled water. Make five (5) trial measurements and record the mass in grams.

4. Compute the mean mass of the distilled water.

5. Fill up the Table 2:

6. Compute the density of distilled water at the observed mean temperature.

7. Compute the % mean deviation and % error of the observed density of distilled Water. Consult a
reference book to determine the density of dis% error tilled water At the observed mean temperature.
Cite the source.

8. Describe and interpret the results in terms of precision and accuracy

C. Volume and Density of Irregularly-shaped Object

1. Weigh an irregularly-shaped object and record the mass in grams.

2. Put water in the graduated cylinder and record the initial volume readings of water In mL
3. Carefully put the irregularly-shaped object in the graduated cylinder containing Water and read
the final volume reading of water in mL
4. Determine the volume of the irregularly-shaped object in mL
5. Compute the density of the irregularly-shaped object in gram per mL.
6. Construct a summary table of the data and interpret the results.

PhP10 Gat Bonifacio coin based on the experiment

Weight 8.6 g

Diameter 25.9 mm While doing

the
Thickness 1.92 mm
experiment,
we realized

that we can get the diameter and thickness of a certain object using metric ruler and we get the mass of
the 10 peso coin using the triple balance beam. We used 5 trial each measurements to be able to get the
mean diameter, mean thickness, and mean mass of the 10 peso coin. After the experiment I compared
our data to the data given by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, who manufactured and distributed the
coin itself. At first, We cite a link published by the BSP showing the properties of the said coin and the
the standard value of diameter, thickness, and mass of PhP10 Gat Bonifacio coin. After measuring five
individual 10-peso coin. We have come up with an average value for the thickness and diameter of the
coin. It gave us an average diameter of 25.9mm, a thickness of 1.92mm and a mass of 8.6 g. The results
of the conducted experiment gave us data that we would eventually compare to the official properties
of the coin, the weight of the coin according to the bank was 8.7g which was very close to my result
which is 8.6g. We computed for the mean of the diameter and thickness to get the average
measurement of the coin in real life. The results that we've got from the experiment were expected
because we've got the chance to have a gist of the diameter and thickness of the 10-peso coin according
to the BSP.
