Activity 2.4 Inscribed Angles and Arcs

Learning Competency:
Derives inductively the relations among chords, arcs, central
angles and inscribed angles. (M10GE-IIc-1)
Proves theorems related to chords, arcs, central angles, and
inscribed angles. (M10GE-IIc-d-1)

What I Need to Do

At the end of the lesson, you will be able to:

1. define inscribed angles.
2. determine the relationship between the inscribed angle and its intercepted arcs.
3. state theorems on chords, arcs and inscribed angles.
4. prove theorems on chords, arcs, inscribed angles
5. apply the theorems in finding the measures of inscribed angles and arcs.

DRILL:
Activity 1:
DIRECTION: Each circle below is divided into 12 congruent arcs, therefore each arc
measures 30°. Name the inscribed angle and its intercepted arc. Give the measure of
the intercepted arc by counting the parts the angle intercept. Measure the angle using
a protractor.

Guide questions:
1. How do you know that the angles you named are inscribed angles?
2. How did you determine the measures of the inscribed angles?
3. How did you name the intercepted arc of the inscribed angles?
4. How did you determine the measure of the intercepted arcs?
5. What have you observed with the measure of the inscribed angle and its
intercepted arc?

Gearing Up

Inscribed angle – an angle whose vertex is on a circle and whose sides contains the
chords of the circle
Intercepted arc – part of a circle that lies between two segments, rays or secants that
intersect the circle.

A
Intercepted arc: AM

Inscribe Angle:∠𝐴𝐼𝑀
I
M

Theorem 1
If an angle is inscribed in a circle, the measure of the angle equals one-half the
measure of its intercepted arcs (or the measure of the intercepted arc is twice
the measure of the inscribed angle). A
Illustrative example:
𝟏𝟑𝟎°
In the figure on the right, :∠𝐴𝐼𝑀 is an inscribed
angle and AM is its intercepted arc.
65°
I
If 𝑚 𝐴𝑀 = 130°, 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑚 ∠𝐴𝐼𝑀 = 65°
M

Theorem 2

2
If two inscribed angle of a circle (or congruent circles) intercepts congruent
arcs or the same arc, then the angles are congruent.

In the figure at the right, inscribed angles R

∠𝑆𝐴𝑅 and ∠𝑆𝑂𝑅 intercept the arc RS.
1 1 A
If 𝑚∠𝑆𝐴𝑅 = 2 𝑚 𝑅𝑆 and 𝑚∠𝑆𝑂𝑅 = 2 𝑚 𝑆𝑅, then
𝑚∠𝑆𝐴𝑅 = 𝑚∠𝑆𝑂𝑅, therefore ∠𝑆𝑂𝑅 ≅ ∠𝑆𝐴𝑅.
O
In the figure 𝑚 𝑆𝑅 = 120°,
1
𝑚∠𝑆𝐴𝑅 = (120°)
2
𝑚∠𝑆𝐴𝑅 = 60° and S
𝑚∠𝑆𝑂𝑅 = 60°

Theorem 3
If an inscribed angle intercepts a semi-circle, then the angle is a right angle.

F I
In ⨀ 𝑆, FT is a semicircle, and intercepted by an
angle ∠𝐹𝐼𝑇.
If 𝑚 𝐹𝑇 = 180°, then
1
𝑚∠𝐹𝐼𝑇 = 𝑚 𝐹𝑇
S 2
1
𝑚∠𝐹𝐼𝑇 = (180°)
2
𝑚∠𝐹𝐼𝑇 = 90° and it is a right angle.

In ⨀ 𝑁, ̅̅̅̅
𝐾𝐷 is a diameter, therefore KD is a
semicircle.
∠ 𝐾𝐼𝐷 intercepts KD, therefore ∠ 𝐾𝐼𝐷 is a right
K D angle.

3
Theorem 4
If a quadrilateral is inscribed in a circle, then its opposite angles are
supplementary.

P
Quadrilateral PINK is inscribed in circle A,
𝑚∠𝐾 = 60° and 𝑚∠𝑁 = 90°

I 𝑚∠𝐾 + 𝑚∠ 𝐼 = 180° 𝑚∠𝑃 + 𝑚∠ 𝑁 = 180°

60° + 𝑚∠ 𝐼 = 180° 𝑚𝑚∠ 𝑃 + 90° = 180°

A 𝑚∠ 𝐼 = 180° − 60° 𝑚∠ 𝑃 = 180° − 90°

𝑚∠ 𝐼 = 120° 𝑚∠ 𝑃 = 90°

1
𝑚 ∠ 𝐿𝐵𝐸 = (𝑚𝐸𝑈𝐿)
2 𝑚𝐿𝑈 + 𝑚𝐸𝑈 = 𝑚𝐸𝑈𝐿 𝑚𝐵𝐿 + 𝑚𝐿𝑈 + 𝑚𝐸𝑈 + 𝐵𝐸 = 360°
1 120° + 𝑚𝐸𝑈 = 210° 𝑚𝐵𝐿 + 120° + 90° + 60° = 360°

𝑚𝐸𝑈 = 90° 𝑚𝐵𝐿 = 360° − 270°

𝑚∠𝐵𝐸𝑈 = (90° + 120°)
