PROBLEM SET #2
SECTION:

INSTRUCTION: Present a complete and clear solution for each problem. Correct answers
with an incorrect solution or unreadable computation are automatically wrong. Use the
space provided for your computation and box the final answer.

1. A simply supported beam with a section shown has a span length of 4.3m. The total dead
load carried by the joist is 25 kN/m. The material properties are fc’=35 MPa and fy= 414
MPa reinforcements made up of 4-20mm∅. Determine the maximum live load (kN/m)
that the beam can carry.

2. Determine the amount of reinforcing bars (As) needed for a typical simply supported
interior beam. The simple span length is 7.5m and the beam spacing is 3.6m. It carries a
superimposed factored floor load of 25kPa. The beam has a web width if 250mm, total
height of 500mm and effective depth of 430mm. The slab thickness is 75mm. The
concrete strength is 21 MPa and fy=276MPa.
3. Draw the shear and moment diagram. If Wo = 10 kN/m and L= 9m.
