I Lost My Job to a Smart Toaster

In recent months Ai image generation has massively improved. What could take

an artist hours to create, the Ai can procure in seconds. Whether it be Dall-e’s

revolutionary image generation or Chat GPT’s human-eske script writing capabilities,

these new computer driven art programs will play a big part in the film industry.

Although, people in the film industry have different views on how the Ai revolution will

affect it. The question that the filmmakers are asking is: Will Ai art empower artists in the

film industry or leave them unemployed?

On one side, the artists argue that in the past Ai has been used to aid, not

replace, artists in the film industry. One great example of this concept is shown in a

video by SoKrispyMedia, “End of Original Art? A.I. Changes these Classic Movies.”. This

video delves into the topic of how using new image tracking Ai can help with

advertisements in movies. When an artist can finish a movie and then add in all the

advertisements to pay for the film after the fact, it can save time and money for the film.

Methods like these have been used in the past by artists working with Ai to give artists

more time to make the movie its own artistic work. This concept is explored by an article

on futurism.com, by Dan Robitzski, called “Artificial Intelligence Is Automating

Hollywood. Now, Art Can Thrive.” This writing gives a look into how automating certain

aspects could improve a film by saying “We find that a lot of the more manual, mundane

jobs become easy targets [for AI automation] where we can have a system that can do

that much, much quicker, freeing up those people to do more creative tasks.” Leaving

the busywork to the computers lets artists put more into their craft. This could also lead

to film companies taking bigger risks with lesser known directors or unused film styles

without worry of losing a ton of money. These artists have seen it in the past, with more

innovations in the technology films can be refined and time can be better used.

On the other hand, many other artists believe that the Ai has become so

advanced that big companies won’t need human input for a movie. Timo Elliott shows

how Ai can outdo humans with this cartoon. (See Figure 1)

Timo Elliott, with his cartoon, shows that if a robot can do what a human can but faster,

the efficient option will always win. This is true for the film industry as well. In the past Ai

programs were never able to make a whole movie on their own but now things are

different. An article from Collider.com by Ron Evangelista explains this by saying

“Moving images, music, and even dialogue will be generated, interwoven, and the

finished product will be a concoction of all of these elements.” The robots can make a

movie but with far less time and effort. Companies won’t want to pay for the inefficient

counterpart and the Ai will secure the job.

I believe that while jobs will definitely be lost as Ai continues to advance, there is

no way for a film to have life and feeling to it without human involvement. The way the

Ai’s work as of now is regurgitating information it has learned from patterns of speech

throughout the internet or analyzing stroke variance in certain, human made, art styles.

Human experience is what makes the Ai seem so creative but in the end there is no art

without a human touch.

As shown above Ai has and will continue to help artists in many job positions as

well as take careers from those whose job can be done more efficiently. Innovation is

the reason Ai has become this powerful and innovation will continue to give the world

easier ways to express its art. Working with what is given and giving works a unique

personality is what separates people from Ai. As long as Ai doesn’t have human

emotion it will never be able to captivate audiences as many works have in the past. As

Dan Robitzski says in the pre mentioned article “creative people get to keep on being

creative as they work alongside the time-saving machines that will make their jobs

simpler and less mundane.”
