SG-5 And SG-5XP Wellhead System

The SG-5 wellhead system is one of the most widely used and field proven
subsea wellhead systems in the world. The system is rated to 10,000 p.s.i.
providing combined elastomer and metal to metal seals for the primary casing
annulus seals. The standard system is adaptable to most BOP arrangements
and casing programs in use.
SG-5 Low Pressure Wellhead Housing
The SG-5 Low Pressure Wellhead Housing (usually arranged for 30”conductor)
has a butt weld bottom preparation for factory installation on the conductor
housing joint. The housing lands and locks into either a Retrievable Guide Base
(RGB) or a Guidelineless Re-entry Assembly (GRA).
The bore of the housing includes a load support shoulder to support the High
Pressure Wellhead Housing, and a lower reaction surface to stabilize the High
Pressure Wellhead Housing and prevent bending loads from being transferred
to the housing joint. Immediately below the load shoulder in the bore of the
housing, is the double groove profile to accept the Cam Actuated Running Tool
used to run the conductor housing joint, guide structure, and conductor casing.
An anti-rotation groove above this profile catches the anti-rotation pin of the
Cam Actuated Running Tool preventing it from rotating in the housing during
makeup and release of the tool. Immediately above the load shoulder in the
bore, is a recess to accept the lock
down ring of the High Pressure
Wellhead Housing. Tapped holes
around the circumference of the
housing provide for the release of
the High Pressure Wellhead
Housing from the Low Pressure
Wellhead Housing upon recovery,
using set screws to depress the
High Pressure Wellhead Housing
lock down ring out of its mating
groove in the Low Pressure
Wellhead Housing.
Four three inch ports are provided
in the housing body to permit
circulation of drilling fluids out of
the housing during cementing of
the surface casing.
The outside diameter of the Low
Pressure Wellhead Housing has a
double groove profile and two 30” SG-5 Low Pressure Wellhead Housing
alignment slots used to install and
align a Completion Guide Base should one be required.

4-2
SG-5 Low Pressure Housing Cam-Actuated
Running Tool
The 30”Cam-Actuated Running Tool runs the
Low Pressure Wellhead Housing, the drilling
guide structure, and the 30”casing.
The tool has a drill pipe box top and pin
bottom which permits the use of drill pipe to
run, land, and cement if necessary, the 30”
casing.
The tool body carries eight rams which
engage a groove profile in the Low Pressure
Wellhead Housing. These rams are forced
radially outward by the tool stem which
features a cam profile. Left hand rotation
moves the stem down through the tool body
along a square thread engagement. The cam
on the stem of the tool moves behind the
rams pushing them out into the mating profile 30” SG-5 Low Pressure Wellhead
in the Low Pressure Wellhead Housing. Right Housing Cam-Actuated Running
hand rotation of the tool stem moves the stem Tool
up, moving the cam from behind the rams,
releasing the lock between the tool and the Low Pressure Wellhead Housing.
“Lock,”and “unlock”stamps on the stem provide a visual indicator of the tool
stem position.
Six 3”Line Pipe bull plugs in the top of the tool body permit the filling of the
conductor with water, or circulation through the top of the tool during jetting
operations.
An o-ring seals between the tool body and the wellhead housing.
The tool has a maximum tensile load capacity in excess of the strength of the
drill pipe.
SG-5 High Pressure Wellhead Housing
The SG-5 High Pressure Wellhead Housing is usually installed in conjunction
with the surface casing (20”) and provides a 10,000 p.s.i. rated connection at the
top for the H-4 Wellhead Connector. In certain cases the housing may be
supplied with another style wellhead connector should an alternative connector
be required by the operator.
The main housing forging has a butt weld bottom preparation for factory welding
to the surface casing housing joint. The housing joint, makes up to the top of the

4-3
casing and provides a specialty pipe connector to facilitate the make up of the
housing joint to the casing at the rig floor.
The housing body has a load support shoulder which lands in the Low Pressure
Wellhead Housing to support the weight of the 20”casing, the BOP, and all
subsequent casing strings installed in the well. A fluted reaction ring on the
lower outside diameter of the housing provides a means of transferring bending
loads to the Low Pressure Wellhead Housing rather than into the conductor or
surface casing. Immediately above the load shoulder, a recess provides
retention for an expanding lock ring which is carried on the outside diameter of
the wellhead housing. When the housing lands in the Low Pressure Wellhead
Housing the lock ring is first compressed as it passes through the top bore of the
Low Pressure Wellhead Housing, then it expands into a mating recess in the
Low Pressure Wellhead Housing to lock the High Pressure Wellhead Housing
into the Low Pressure Wellhead Housing.
The top outside diameter of the High Pressure Wellhead Housing has the profile
for the H-4 connector to engage to mate the BOP to the wellhead. The top bore
of the High Pressure Wellhead Housing has the seal taper for the VX gasket
which provides the seal between
the wellhead and the BOP. This
seal taper is stainless steel
overlaid to limit corrosion in that
area.
The lower bore of the housing
body has a load support shoulder
referred to as the nominal seat,
which supports all the
subsequently installed casing
hangers. The standard housing
can accept three hangers, either
three casing hangers, or two
casing hangers and a tubing
hanger. Each hanger location in
the bore of the housing above the
nominal seat has a recess for the
casing hanger lock down ring, and
a seal surface for the casing
hanger packoff. The top hanger
position also includes a recess for
a tubing hanger or production
casing hanger lock down
mechanism.
The top bore of the High Pressure 18-3/4” SG-5 High Pressure
Wellhead Housing
Wellhead Housing also includes the
double groove profile for the Cam Actuated Running Tool which is used to run

4-4
the housing. Some housings have a Left Hand Square running thread instead of
the cam tool profile.
The High Pressure Wellhead Housing is usually installed and run at the top of
the surface casing. The Cam Actuated Running Tool, or the Threaded Running
Tool, allow the housing to be landed and the casing cemented through drillpipe.
This hole section is usually drilled with sea water as the drilling fluid, without use
of a riser to bring drilling fluids back to the rig. Drilling and cementing returns are
allowed spill through the ports in the Low Pressure Wellhead Housing onto the
sea floor. A drillpipe cement stinger made up below the housing running tool
permits cementing the surface casing through
drillpipe once the housing is landed and locked to
the Low Pressure Wellhead Housing.
SG-5 High Pressure Housing Cam-Actuated
Running Tool
The SG-5 High Pressure Housing Cam-Actuated
Running Tool runs the High Pressure Wellhead
Housing and the surface casing.
The tool has a drill pipe box top and pin bottom
which permits the use of drill pipe to run, land, and
cement the 20”casing.
The tool body carries eight rams which engage a
groove profile in the High Pressure Wellhead
Housing. These rams are forced radially outward by
the tool stem which features a cam profile. Left-hand
rotation moves the stem down through the tool body
along a square thread engagement. The cam on the
stem of the tool moves behind the rams pushing
them out into the mating profile in the High Pressure
Wellhead Housing. Right hand rotation of the tool
stem moves the stem up, moving the cam from
behind the rams, releasing the lock between the
18-3/4” SG-5 Cam Actuated
tool and the High Pressure Wellhead Housing.
Running Tool
“Lock,”and “unlock”stamps on the stem provide a
visual indicator of the tool stem position.
Removable pipe plugs in the top of the tool body permit the filling of the
conductor with water. A check valve is available to maintain hydrostatic pressure
in the casing as it is lowered into the sea.
An o-ring seals between the tool body and the wellhead housing.
The tool has a maximum tensile load capacity in excess of drill pipe.

4-5
SG-5 High Pressure Housing Threaded Running Tool
The SG-5 High Pressure Housing Threaded Running
Tool runs the High Pressure Wellhead Housing and the
surface casing.
The tool has a drill pipe box top and pin bottom which
permits the use of drill pipe to run, land, and cement the
20”casing.
This tool is used when the High Pressure Wellhead
Housing has a Left Hand Square running thread. The
tool has a matching thread pin, which makes up to the
housing running thread.
The left-hand thread provides for left-hand make up at
the rig floor, and right hand release subsea.
Removable pipe plugs in the top of the tool body permit
the filling of the conductor with water. A check valve is
available to maintain hydrostatic pressure in the casing
as it is lowered into the sea.
An o-ring seals between the tool body and the
wellhead housing. 18-3/4” SG-5 Left Hand Square
Threaded Running Tool
The tool has a maximum tensile load capacity in
excess of drill pipe.
Nominal Seat Protector
Prior to the BOP stack test or running casing, the
Nominal Seat Protector must be retrieved. This
cylindrical sleeve features a groove at the top bore
which is engaged by the Seat Protector, Wear Bushing
Running and Retrieving Tool’s lock ring. The Nominal
Seat Protector lands on the “nominal seat”in the High
Pressure Wellhead Housing. The nominal seat is a
support shoulder in the lower bore of the High Pressure
Wellhead Housing, which subsequently will support the
weight of all additional casing, plus in some cases,
production tubing. The design of the Nominal Seat
Protector is such that once installed in the High
Pressure Wellhead Housing, the nominal seat, and the
entire bore of the High Pressure Wellhead Housing is
protected from damage from tools working through the
wellhead bore. The Nominal Seat Protectors for the SG
system have from one to three o-rings on the outside
diameter which keep solids from building up between
the NSP and the wellhead housing. The o-rings also
SG-5 Nominal Seat Protector

4-6
prevent the NSP from rising out of its seat during drilling fluid circulation. It
requires about 6,000 to 10,000 pounds of overpull to retrieve the NSP from its
seated position.
Seat Protector/Wear Bushing Running and Retrieving
Tool
The Seat Protector/Wear Bushing Running and
Retrieving Tool is a weight set hydraulic release tool
which is used to install and retrieve the Nominal Seat
Protector, all of the wear bushings, the emergency seal
and the corrosion cap.
The Seat Protector/Wear Bushing Running and
Retrieving Tool consists of a central tool stem body,
equipped with an enclosed hydraulic system. When
pressure is applied down the running string, pistons react
against the tool body, rotate the torque ring, retract the
lockring, and permit the tool to be either lifted out of seat
protectors, or unlocked and lifted out of wear bushings,
emergency seals, or corrosion caps. The lockring secures
the tool to all assemblies. Spring loaded torque buttons
transfer the torque required to lock a wear bushing into
a packoff assembly, or to make up a threaded Nominal Seat
emergency seal assembly into the running threads of a Protector and Wear
casing hanger. Bushing Running
and Retrieving Tool
The tool is available with through bore
in cases where the operator prefers to be able to pump through
the tool. The tool release mechanism in this case is a dart which
is dropped into the tool to provide the hydraulic pressure barrier
required to activate the tool hydraulic cylinders.

4-8
SG-5 Casing Hanger
SG-5 Casing Hangers include a fluted cylindrical hanger body, and a lock down
ring. Vertical slots arrayed around the casing hanger outside diameter permit
fluid circulation past the hanger after it lands in the wellhead. Total flowby area
is 13 square inches. The lock down ring is carried on the outside diameter of the
hanger above the 45o load shoulder. The load shoulder lands on the High
Pressure Wellhead Housing Nominal Seat in the case of the 13-3/8”Casing
Hanger. All subsequently installed hangers land on top of the previously
installed casing hanger. The lock down ring is a c-ring which is expanded by the
bottom of the casing packoff when it is set. The ring expands into a recess in the
High Pressure Wellhead housing trapping it between the hanger body and the
wellhead. The ring is removable, and not run in many cases, as well
abandonment is facilitated if the hangers are not locked down.
The lower bore of the SG-5 casing hanger is threaded to match the casing
threads used for the casing it is supporting. The upper bore features a two-pitch
modified left hand square thread profile which
makes up to the Universal Casing Hanger Running Tool. The upper outside
diameter of the hanger has a two-pitch right hand modified square thread to
which the SG-5 LTR Casing Packoff is mated.
All the casing hangers in the SG-5 wellhead assembly have the same outer
configuration, the same packoff, and are installed with the same tool.
SG-LTR Casing Hanger Packoff Assembly
The SG-LTR Casing Hanger Packoff Assembly (low torque, retrievable) features
an elastomer element encapsulated at the top and bottom by “U”shaped end
rings. A drive nut mated to the top of the non-
rotating seal element rotates down along the
casing hanger
outside diameter thread of the casing hanger
as right hand rotation is applied to the casing
hanger running tool. As the seal moves
downward it bottoms out against the casing
hanger body, and is trapped between the packoff
casing hanger outside diameter and the nut
wellhead bore. Further right hand rotation of
the casing hanger running tool continues to
force the drive nut downward applying a packoff
seal
compressive load to the non-rotating seal
element. This load causes the elastomer in
the seal element to extrude laterally
expanding the “U”shaped end rings. The end
rings are

sufficient force to initiate a metal to metal
seal capable of containing 10,000 p.s.i.
The drive nut and the seal element are
coated with Turcite to reduce friction and Metal to Metal seals

minimize the torque required to energize

the packoff seal element. The drive nut of Elastomer Compression
Seal
the packoff assembly has four
vertical slots a the top bore which are Metal to Metal seals

engaged by torque keys on the casing

hanger running tool permitting torque to be
transmitted to the drive nut as the running SG-LTR Seal
tool is rotated. J-slots branching from these vertical slots provide for the lock
down of the subsequently installed wear bushing. Four flowby slots are also
provided on the packoff drive nut to facilitate fluid circulation around the packoff
before it is set.
Universal Casing Hanger Running Tool
The Universal Casing Hanger Running Tool mates to any of the SG-5 casing
hangers of the same size, to permit the casing to be landed using drill pipe.
Using this tool the casing hanger is landed, the casing cemented, the packoff
positioned, set, and tested all in one trip.
The tool features a 4-1/2”IF or 6-5/8”regular box top, and a 4-1/2”non-upset
8rd box bottom connection. O-rings at the lower outside diameter seal between
the
tool and the casing hanger bore when the tool is mated to the hanger. The two-
pitch modified square thread provides for right hand release from the casing
hanger during the installation operation thereby preventing the inadvertent
backoff of any other connection in the running string. Torque keys on the lower
outside diameter of the tool engage the slots in the SG-LTR packoff drive nut.
The torque keys may be removed if the tool is used to land the casing hanger
but not to install the packoff. A centralizer sleeve attached to the central stem of
the tool insures that it is centered and vertically stable in the wellhead.
Abbreviated Running Procedure
1. The casing hanger is generally shipped to the location with a casing pup joint
made up to the bottom. The Universal Casing Hanger Running Tool, the
casing packoff, and the cement plug launching assembly are mated to the
casing hanger prior to running the casing, then set aside as the casing is run.
2. Make up the cement plug launch assembly to the bottom of the Universal
Casing Hanger Running Tool. The cement plug launch assembly includes

4-11
two rubber wiper plugs fitted to the inside diameter of the casing, which are
pinned to a sub with shear pins. Make up the casing hanger packoff to the
casing hanger. The packoff is threaded onto the hanger until the bottom edge
of the packoff is from 2-1/2”to 2-5/8”above the stop shoulder of the casing
hanger. This dimension may vary with various system configurations but the
standard system standoff is given here.
3. Install the Universal Casing Hanger Running Tool on the casing hanger and
packoff simultaneously. As left hand rotation threads the tool into the casing
hanger, the drive keys on the tool rotate the drive nut on the packoff causing
it to thread up the casing hanger body. The final make up standoff is 4-1/8”to
4-1/4”.
4. Set the assembly aside.
5. Run the casing.
6. Make up the casing hanger, packoff, running tool, and cement plug launch
assembly to the last joint of casing.
7. Lower the assembly into the hole using drill pipe above the running tool.
Measure into the hole to verify landing depth.
8. Land the casing hanger.
9. Circulate the well bottoms up to clean up any
cuttings which may have settled in the
wellhead as the casing was run.
10. Cement the casing. Casing is cemented by
simultaneously mixing and pumping a slurry
down the drill pipe. A ball is dropped down
the drill pipe before pumping any cement.
The ball seats in the lower cement wiper
plug and seals the bore. Additional pump
pressure shears the pin retaining the plug
and the plug begins to travel down the
casing with cement following it. A volume of
cement calculated to fill the 17-1/2”X 13-3/8”
casing annulus is pumped. A dart is then
dropped down the drill pipe which seats in
the upper cement wiper plug. Additional
pump pressure shears its retaining pin,
releasing it down the casing. Mud is pumped
behind the upper wiper plug. The lower
wiper plug seats on top of the Float collar near
Universal Casing Hanger
the bottom of the casing. Additional pump Running Tool, Packoff, and
pressure bursts a diaphragm in the plug and Casing Hanger Made-up to run
cement circulates past the plug, out the shoe

4-12
and fills the hole outside the casing. When the second wiper plug bottoms
out on top of the first, the pumps are shut down and cementing is complete.
11. Rotate the running string to the right counting the rotations. The first four
rotations releases the running tool from the casing hanger. An additional 4-
1/4 turns should move the packoff assembly downward into the setting
position on top of the casing hanger. A torque build up should then be
noticed. Continue right hand rotation increasing torque applied to the
recommended initial packoff energizing torque.
12. Close pipe rams.
13. Pressure down a choke and kill line through a BOP outlet below the closed
rams. Pressure will build between the closed ram, the packoff, and running
tool seals. It is very important the increase the pressure by 1,000 p.s.i.
increments and monitor the amount of fluid pumped. It should not require
more than 1/4 of a barrel. If the packoff leaks the pump pressure would go
into the annulus and could collapse the inner casing or burst the outer
casing. Leave the top of the running string open during the packoff test. If
pressure does not increase as anticipated the packoff may be leaking. If the
running tool seals leak the fluid will return back up the running string.
14. After a successful test pick up the running tool
slightly and flush the wellhead bore before
retrieving the running string.
15. Run the wear bushing.
16. Resume drilling.
If a leak is detected at the packoff remedial action
must be taken. More torque may be applied to the
packoff. Failing that, the packoff may be retrieved
and a new packoff run and set. A Packoff Running
and Retrieval Tool is provided for this purpose.
Full Bore Casing Hanger Running Tool
If an operator prefers to use casing rather than drill
pipe to run and land the casing hanger a Full Bore
Casing Hanger Running Tool is used. This may be
necessary for heavy casing strings or deep holes
where multiple stage cementing is required. The
Full Bore Casing Hanger Running Tool runs
similarly to the drill pipe tool except it has a casing
box connection at the top, and the drift is
equivalent to the casing drift. This permits a
conventional cement head to be installed above Full Bore Casing Hanger
the rotary for connection to the cement pump, and Running Tool
to launch the wiper plugs.

4-13
Packoff locked on tool

Packoff Retrieval and Reinstallation Tool

4-14
Packoff Retrieval And Reinstallation Tool
The Packoff Retrieval And Reinstallation Tool is used should it be necessary to
retrieve the casing packoff and reinstall it, or should it be desirable to install the
packoff on a separate trip from the casing hanger installation.
In the packoff retrieval mode the tool must be run on left hand threaded drill pipe
or strapped drill pipe since left hand rotation is required to release the packoff
from the casing hanger.
The tool has 6-5/8”regular box top and 3-1/2”IF pin bottom.
J-lugs near the bottom outside diameter of the tool engage the J-slots of the
packoff assembly when the tool is landed. Spring loaded torque keys align with
and engage the vertical slots at the top of the packoff. Left hand rotation
releases the packoff compression and backs the packoff free of the casing
hanger. The J-lugs retain the packoff for retrieval.
To reinstall the packoff it is mated to the tool’s J-lugs. The tool is run until it
lands on the casing hanger. Right hand rotation then energizes the packoff. O-
rings on a floating sleeve at the bottom of the tool seal the casing hanger bore to
permit pressure testing when the packoff is energized.
To release from the packoff pressure down the running string forces a spring
loaded piston down in the tool bore which opens a hydraulic cylinder that forces
a sleeve on the outside of the tool down disengaging the torque keys. The tool
can then be unjayed from the packoff and retrieved.
SG Emergency Packoff
The SG Emergency Packoff is run should the primary seal fail. The SG
Emergency Packoff seals above the area the standard packoff seals. The
outside diameter seal is an SG
style seal, the inside diameter
seals are two o-rings which seal
against the outside diameter of
the casing hanger. The packoff
is installed using the Packoff
Running and Retrieval Tool. It is
shorter than the standard
packoff and will not interfere
with subsequently installed
casing hangers.
SG Emergency Packoff

4-15
BOP Test Plug

Isolation Test Tool

4-16
SG Emergency Seal
The SG Emergency Seal is used if the
emergency packoff fails or cannot be
run. This assembly threads into the casing
hanger landing threads. O-rings on the
lower outside diameter seal inside the
casing hanger bore. A bulk elastomer seal
on the outside diameter seals against the
wellhead housing bore. The Emergency
seal is run with the Packoff Running and
Retrieval Tool.
SG BOP Test Plug
The SG-5 BOP Test Plug seals the
wellbore at the wellhead to permit BOP
pressure and function tests isolating the
test pressure above the wellhead. The SG- SG Emergency
5 BOP Test Plug has a 4-1/2”IF (NC50) Seal
box top connection and a 4-1/2”IF (NC50) pin bottom
connection. Two seal profiles on the outside diameter permit the plug to land
and seal in the High Pressure Wellhead Housing once the Nominal Seat
Protector is removed, or in the top of each of the casing hangers once the wear
bushings are removed. Two o-rings along each seal diameter provide the seal
interface between the plug and the mating landing profiles.
SG BOP Isolation Test Tool
An SG BOP Isolation Test Tool is available which may be run above the wear
bushings as well as above the casing hangers thereby saving the two trips
required to retrieve wear bushings and reinstall them for BOP testing. Since the
tool seals in the bore of the High Pressure Wellhead Housing above any of the
casing hangers it isolates the casing packoff assemblies from BOP test pressure
as well.
The tool uses a bulk elastomer seal to seal in the upper bore of the High
Pressure Wellhead Housing. The seal is in the relaxed mode as the tool is run.
Once the tool is landed, right hand rotation disengages and internal J-slot
between the body and stem of the tool. The stem then moves downward as the
landing assembly is slacked off, and drill pipe weight extrudes the elastomer
seal outward against the bore of the High Pressure Wellhead Housing.
Special wear bushings with extended bottom profiles to land on top of the
previously installed casing hanger must be used to permit the use of this tool
above the wear bushing. The J-lugs which normally support the standard wear
bushing cannot take the test pressure load exerted above the isolation test tool.

4-17
SG-5 Wear Bushings
Wear Bushings are provided to land above
each casing hanger once it is installed and
packed off. The SG-5 Wear Bushings are run
and retrieved with the same tool which runs
and retrieves the Nominal Seat Protector. In
addition the latch groove at the top of the wear
bushing, four J-slots are provided for
engagement of the running and retrieving tool.
J-lugs at the lower outside diameter of each
wear
bushing engage J-slots in the top of each
casing hanger packoff. The J-slot engagement
of the wear bushing maintains the wear
bushing in position during drilling operations.
An o-ring at the top outside diameter of the
SG-5 7” Wear Bushing
wear bushings prevents solids from building up
between the wear bushing and the wellhead housing.
SG System Corrosion Cap
The SG system Corrosion Cap protects the top
of the wellhead and the exposed bores inside
during temporary abandonment of the well. The
tools snaps onto the High Pressure Wellhead
Housing H-4 profile and is retained by leaf
springs which engage the H-4 grooves on the
outside diameter of the High Pressure Wellhead
Housing.
A tubing conduit is provided which permits the
placement of corrosion inhibitor immediately
beneath the corrosion cap after it is landed.
The corrosion cap can be run on drill pipe using
the Nominal Seat Protector, Wear Bushing
Running and Retrieving Tool.

4-19
30” Cam Actuated Running Tool With Drill Ahead Capability
The 30”Cam Actuated Running Tool With Drill Ahead Capability is used to save
trips on the well spud. The tool permits the conductor to be jetted into place, and
the 26”hole drilled in a single trip. The tool functions the same as the standard
CART except the tool has a central stem which is released from the body by
means of a J-latch assembly. The tool stem drops out of the body and the drill
string can be lowered to the bottom of the hole to continue drilling the 26”hole
section without the necessity of pulling the CART back out of the hole.
The tool is locked together by a pin which prevents the stem and body from
rotating in relation to each other until the pin is removed. Once the tool is locked
into the wellhead the stem cannot release until the tool dogs are retracted. The
pin holding the stem to the body can be removed after the tool is locked into the
wellhead, or using an ROV after the conductor is fully jetted into SG-5XP
Wellhead System

30” Cam Actuated Running Tool with Drill Ahead Capability

4-20
SG-5XP High Pressure Wellhead Housing
In a single stack 18-3/4”wellhead system the SG-5XP (extended profile)
provides for the running of an additional 16”casing string within the High
Pressure Wellhead Housing. The High Pressure Wellhead Housing is therefore
extended in length to provide the extra place for the 16”hanger at the lower
bore. Because the High Pressure Wellhead Housing must still maintain the 17-
9/16”minimum bore, and the 16”casing hanger must drift a 15”bit, the wall
thickness of the 16”hanger is insufficient to support the subsequently installed
casing strings in combination with the necessary test pressure loads. For this
reason the SG-5XP High Pressure Wellhead Housing has a recess and grove
profile above the 16”casing hanger profile. The recess provides for better fluid
flow by around the 16”casing hanger. The groove provides a load support
interface so that the subsequently installed casing string weight and test
pressure loads are not applied to the 16”casing hanger or the High Pressure
Wellhead Housing nominal seat.
SG-5XP 16” Casing Hanger, Packoff, and Running Tool
The 16”SG-5XP Casing Hanger runs and packs off similarly to the standard SG-
5 casing hangers. Since the inside diameter at the top has a larger bore than the
standard SG-5 casing hangers, the standard Casing Hanger and Packoff
Running and Retrieving Tool cannot be used to land this string. A 16”Casing
Hanger and Packoff Running and Retrieving Tool is provided which functions in
an identical manner to the standard Casing Hanger and Packoff Running and
Retrieving Tool except it fits the larger bore of the 16”SG-5XP casing hanger. A
full bore version of this tool is also available.
The standard SG-LTR casing packoff is run with the hanger.
SG-5XP Nominal Seat Protector, Wear Bushings, and BOP Test Plug
Because of the extended length of the SG-5XP High Pressure Wellhead
Housing and the additional casing hanger profile, only the SG-5XP Nominal Seat
Protector can be used in the SG-5XP High Pressure Wellhead Housing.
An additional wear bushing is provided to be run above the 16”casing hanger
which has the extended length necessary to protect the longer bore.
The BOP Test Plug for the SG-5XP system has an additional seal profile to
accommodate the additional casing hanger bore of the 16”casing.

4-21
SG-5XP Wellhead System

4-22
13-3/8” SG-5XP Casing Hanger
The 13-3/8”SG-5XP Casing Hanger has an
expanding load ring assembly on the lower
outside diameter which expands into the
mating groove in the SG-5XP High Pressure
Wellhead Housing when the casing hanger is
landed. The expanding load ring is normally in
a retracted position. The ring is pinned in
place using brass shear pins as it is run, to
prevent premature expansion and hang up
while it is run from the rotary. A reaction ring
below the load ring lands on top of the 16”
casing hanger. As the casing is lowered, the
reaction ring applies a bearing load against
the bottom of the load ring. When about
40,000 pounds of load is taken the brass
shear pins retaining the reaction ring and load 13-3/8” SG-5XP
ring in the running position shear, and the load Casing Hanger
ring is forced outward by the bias on the outside
diameter of the casing hanger body, into the mating profile of the SG-5XP High
Pressure Wellhead Housing. This load support mechanism insures that the
casing weight and test pressure loads of all of the subsequently installed casing
strings is transferred into the SG-5XP High Pressure Wellhead Housing through
the 13-3/8”casing hanger.
9-5/8” and 7” Casing Hangers for the SG-5XP System
The 9-5/8”and 7”Casing Hangers for the SG-5XP system are the standard SG-
5 casing hangers. The same running and retrieving tools are used to land and
seal the 9-5/8”and 7”casing strings as well.
SG-6 Wellhead System
As a requirement for a 15,000 p.s.i. rated wellhead system evolved the SG-6
wellhead system was developed. The SG-6 system uses the same load support
mechanism as is used for the 13-3/8”SG-5XP casing hanger only it is used for
each casing hanger in the system. By this means casing string weight and the
additional test pressure load at 15,000 p.s.i. is not cumulative from one casing
string to the next. All casing weights and test pressure loads are supported at
independent load support grooves in the bore of the SG-6 High Pressure
Wellhead Housing. The system uses all the same running tools as the SG-5
system.

With the advent of the MS-700 Wellhead System the SG-6 system became
obsolete.
SG-5 Wellhead Tieback Connectors
The SG-5 or SG-5XP systems may be tied back to a platform for production by
using special tieback connectors to establish risers from the subsea wellhead to
the surface facility. The standard systems locks and seals the 20”, 13-3/8”, and
9-5/8”casing strings in the wellhead to the tieback risers.
The initial riser connector lands and locks to the High Pressure Wellhead
Housing. The riser makes up without the need to rotate the riser string, and a
funnnel adapter facilitates stabbing the connector subsea. The intermediate riser
(13-3/8”) locks into the 20 tieback connector and provides an annular seal
between the two risers at the wellhead. The inner riser (9-5/8”) makes up to a
special internal thread provided in the 9-5/8”tieback casing hanger. The 9-5/8”
tieback connector provides a full metal to metal seal between the outer riser, the
casing hanger, and the wellhead.
