CHEM 332 Success Hours Spring 2023

Success Hours: Ch 15 and Ch 14 (Spectroscopy Review)

1. Provide appropriate reagents and conditions to convert each of the following alkyl halides and alkyne
into the indicated type of organometallic molecules, and draw the molecules produced. Also fill in the
second product in both pathways.

2. Provide reasonable mechanisms for step 2 and 3 of the following transformation.

a.

b. For the product state the number of signals, integrations, and splitting patterns of each that you
predict would be present in the 1H-NMR spectra.
c. What IR signals (bond-stretches) would you predict for the product? What IR signals would you
predict for the ethanaldehyde (#2 above the arrow) reagent?

3. Provide the product for the following reaction.

a. Identify the signals for the product in its 1H-NMR provided below.
b. State 3 different IR signals (bond-stretches) that you would predict for the product and indicate
the feature of the product each stretch corresponds to.

Signal splitting:

“s” = singlet, “d” = doublet, “t” = triplet,

“q” = quartet, “m” = multiplet
