Lesson no:

I. PREPARATION:
Title: VERNIER HEIGHT GAUGE
1. Objectives: At the end of the lesson the trainees will be able to:
 State the name of the parts of a vernier height gauge.
 State the functions of each part.
 List out the specific uses of a vernier height gauge.
2. Teaching Aids: White board, Maker, Pointer, Duster, Chart, model, Visualizer, Projector
etc.
3. Introduction
a. Review: In the previous lesson, we took the information about special micrometer.
b. Motivation: Motivate about vernier height gauge

II. PRESENTATION:
Developments Information Points Hints
/ Topics
Parts of  Base - This is the datum from which Show chart / model
Vernier Height measurements and setting are made. The
Gauge underside of the base is hardened, ground
and lapped.
 Beam - This is similar to the beam
scale of a vernier caliper and is attached to
the base.
 Vernier slide - This unit slides on the
beam and carries the vernier plate, locking
screws, fine setting device and scriber.
 Some vernier height gauges are
provided with a rack and pinion
arrangement for moving the slide along
the beam.
 Vernier height gauges are provided
with both straight and offset scribers.

Zero setting  The offset scriber permits zero setting Show chart / model
gauges of the instrument from the datum surface.
 While using a straight scriber, the zero
setting of the instrument is at a level above
the datum surface. In this case the zero
setting is to be checked using the precision
round block, supplied along with the
instrument.
Vernier height gauges with which we can
measure from the datum surface without
the special offset scriber are also available.
The size of the vernier height gauge is
state by the height of the beam. The most
commonly used size has a beam of
300mm height.
Vernier height gauges are used with
surface plates or aother accurate flat
surface.
Uses and  Accurate measurements are Give assignments.
reading of important in layout (marking off) and
Vernier Height inspection work
Gauge  Vernier height gauges are particularly
suitable for marking off accurate distances
and centre location.
 The graduations and readings are the
same as those of vernier caliper.

III. Application:
Summary: Explain different parts, its uses, least count & reading of vernier height
gauge in shortly.
IV. Test:
1) Name the different parts of vernier height gauge.
2) Why vernier height gauge is used?
3) What are the purposes of straight and offset scribers?

Assignment:
State the purpose of two types of scriber used in vernier height gauge.
