§ Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) is an apex organisation of industry in

India came intoexistence in 1895. It has its headquarter in New Delhi. ClI
operates through a federal structure: TheNational Council, Regional
Councils, State and Zonal Councils. It performs a very important role for
thegrowth and development of industry in general, and Engineering
Industry in particular. It has a large number of member companies - small,
medium and large from public and private sectors.•
§ CIl plays a major role in promoting international industrial cooperation. It
acts as a catalyst forindustry particularly regarding quality, productivity and
human resources development.
§ The four majoractivities deserve to be highlighted which are as follows:1.
Dialogue with the Government: CIl initiates in strengthening its dialogue
with the government. It is in continuous dialogue and cooperation with the
government in the process of policy formulation and procedure
rationlisation.
§ 2. Improving Competitivenessof Indian Industry: CIl's activities have been
aimed atimproving competitiveness of Indian Industry. Its focus is on critical
areas of improvement,such as, Environment, Quality, Technology,
Technical Education and Training and HumanResource Development.
§ 3. Integration of Indian Industry with the Rest of the World: CIl takes a
number ofinitiatives to integrate Indian industry with the rest of the world.
The main stress, has been onspreading the vision of new India and building
partnership for growth. A key element of CIl'swork on international front its
Trade Fairs Programme.
§ 4. Social Development Activities: CII has organised programmes on regular
basis on RuralDevelopment, Education, Literacy, Family Welfare, etc., to
reinforce Industry's commitmentto the public.
