3.1 Leads Hookup

1. Require patient to rest, lying on his/her back before putting electrodes
on patient. Patient must remain in the same position for resting without
movement or talking.
2. Using standard 12-lead cables, follow the procedure below:

For acquisition of the standard ECG leads 4 electrodes must be applied on

the limbs and 6 on the chest. The limb electrodes should be placed above
wrists and ankles. Each lead is marked as follows:

Wilson System
RA: Right Arm, on the medial side of wrist or lateral side
between the shoulder and elbow.
RL: Right Leg, on the medial side above the ankle.
LA: Left Arm, on the medial side of wrist or the lateral
side between the shoulder and elbow.
LL: Left Leg, on the medial side above the ankle.
C1: Fourth intercostal space at the right border of the
sternum.
C2: Fourth intercostal space at the left border of the
sternum.
C3: On the 5th rib, midway between C2 and C4.
C4: Fifth intercostal space at the left mid-clavicular line.
C5: At the horizontal level of V4 at left anterior axillary
line.
C6: At the horizontal level of V4 at the mid-axillary line.
C7*: At the left posterior axillary line in the 5th intercostal
space.
C8*: At the left scapular line in the 5th intercostal space
C3R*: Opposite C3, on the right side of the thorax.
C4R*: Opposite C4, on the right side of the thorax.
* means Additional standard leads. You can sample the
Additional standard leads ECG with Custom 12 Leads ECG
function.

Frank System
Frank X, Y, Z hookups should be applied on patient for vector ECG
sampling.
RA: Right Arm, on the medial side of wrist or lateral side
between the shoulder and elbow.
RL: Right Leg, on the medial side above the ankle.

16
EcgExplorer 500A Computerized ECG workstation

RL: Right Leg, on the medial side above the ankle.

LA: Left Arm, on the medial side of wrist or the lateral
side between the shoulder and elbow.
LL: Left Leg, on the medial side above the ankle.
C1: Red X (-) Right mid-axillary line in the fifth
intercostal space.
C4: Brown X (+) Left mid-axillary line on the same
horizontal line as C1.
C3: Green Y (+) Mid-clavicle line on the same horizontal
level as C1 and C4.
C6: Purple Y (-) Any point of neck, avoid carotid artery
and jugular vein.
C2: Yellow Z (+) Mid-sternum, on the same horizontal
level as C1 and C4.
C5: Black Z (-) Center of the spine on the horizontal level
as 1 and 2.

NOTE: It is important that the patient cables are not tangled and the leads are
properly connected. The patient’s arms and legs are totally relaxed. Also,
check that the computer is plugged into a properly grounded socket. For
extremely hairy chests, you should shave the location which leads place on
to ensure good conductivity.

NOTE: If the patient’s skin is dirty, first cleanse with 70% Ethyl Alcohol (Rubbing
Alcohol) and dry the skin completely.

NOTE: A thickness of the ECG baseline or flat line will usually mean the lead is
not conducting properly. Check the right ankle - it is the grounded lead and
is most important to having good conductivity.

NOTE: Ground wire should be properly connected. One end of the ground wire
should be connected with the out cover of the computer. The other end
should be connected with the public ground wire or water pipe.

NOTE: The patient cable should not be kneaded or bent. Or the cable will be
broken. The connector of the patient cable should not get in touch with the
earth line or other bare metal parts.

Appendix A: Maintenance and Cleaning

Maintenance of the patient cable
1. The patient cable should be cleaned every 20 tests. Use cotton cloth to
wipe the dirt. Do not use the detergent with the content of alcohol, or
the cable will become rigidified and easy to break. Sterilize the cables
by ultraviolet radiation light.
2. The patient cable should be checked if it has physical break each time
when starting a new patient test.
Maintenance of the ECG Acquisition Box
1. Keep ECG Acquisition Box clean.
2. The ECG Acquisition Box should not work in humid environment.
3. Do not use the detergent with the content of alcohol to clean the ECG
Acquisition Box. Do not let liquid flow into the ECG Acquisition Box.

Maintenance of Monitor
1. The monitor should be placed 10cm away from wall.
2. When connected the monitor to the power socket, the monitor current
should not over the maximum current of the power supply socket and
also should not over the rated current of the wire.
3. Plug out the power line when cleaning the monitor. Do not use liquid
detergent or organic solvent. You may use slightly wet cloth to clean it.
4. When shut down the power, you should hold the plug and pull out it.
Do not pull the wire.
5. Do not put the monitor at the places such as high voltage, electric field
and other high magnetic field. Put it at the places of good ventilation
and not the hot and wet environment.
6. Use screen saver and shut down the monitor when not using.
7. There are many holes on the cover of the monitor which are used for
ventilation. Do not cover it.
8. Do not place any plants near the monitor because water and dust will
come into monitor.
9. Put the monitor at the stable places.
10. Do not step on the power supply wire.
11. If you have two monitor putted in the same room, you should try to
separate them to prevent noises.

Maintenance of computer
1. Keep the room clean and dry.
2. Open and close the computer using correct method.
3. In case of abnormal closing, perform hard disk scan and modify the
faulty in time.
4. Do not work in the high temperature environment.

35
EcgExplorer 500A Computerized ECG workstation

Appendix B: Trouble Shooting

1. Q: When I launch the EcgExplorer 500A software, it pop up “Security key
not found”. How to solve the problem?
A: First check if the security key that plugged into the computer USB port is
loose. Then check if the security key driver has been installed and worked.

2. Q: Why the sampling ECG is just line or artifacts?

A: First, check if the ECG lead wire is loose from the ECG acquisition box.
Second, check if the earth line worked. Third, check if the correct sampling
device is selected.

3. Q: The printer does not work even after several minutes after I click the
print button in the software.
A: Check the printer cable connected to the computer. Reinstall the printer
driver.

4. Q: In case of the program abnormally exit, will the patient data will be
lost?
A: The patient data will not be lost. Restart computer and EcgExplorer 500A
